TOPICS OF THE WEEK. LEST WE FORGET. [Newspaper Article] — Heidelberg News and Greensborough, Eltham and Diamond Creek Chronicle — 17 November 1917

TChe Detes. PUBLISHED EVERY SATURDAY MORNING SATURDAY, NOVEI\IBER 17, TOPICS OF THE WEEK. -4- LEST WE FORGET. The Fairfield branch of the Red Cross Society (men's section) make themselves known about once a year with their an nual celebrations, but the real work of the society goes on unremittingly all the year round. Just recently a rush order came from the central depot for 100 cases to send Xmas goods away in. The tim ber alone cost £30, and the members worked liked Trojans, completing the full number and sending them in in three weeks' time, working only two nights a week. This meant work, but the members went at it with a will, and things have not been so lively ill the workshop for a long while. Long planks of timber were put through the busy saw, and the smaller pieces thus cutsoon began to grow into cases, which, as the number increased,Npiled up until there was hardly room to move. The noise of the busy saw, which is usually loud enough to prevent hearing one another talk, ...

TENNIS ALOOFNESS. [Newspaper Article] — Heidelberg News and Greensborough, Eltham and Diamond Creek Chronicle — 17 November 1917

TENNIS ALOOFNESS. Sb,-The courteous tone of "'WVell de's" letter under the above heading rn issue of the 10th instant, per iesme to reply on behalf of the Ivan Tennis Club, and I may say it is sur jing to learn that the aloofness of the '. members is "a much talked of sub :6" As far as I have been able to as rin members of the commnittee have ter evidence of the aloofness or -?sdge of the talk. It is to be natu ly inferred from thie letter that the . talking is done by some ntew mem who feel aggrieved, but as these are tory few their volubility seems alto ter out of proportion to their number. !ough quite certain that any aloof s is more apparent that real, I can ,ite believe that your correspondent i:s the opiniont of someone who, hugh perhaps a combination of cir n?unces, may not have felt at home angst the menmbers after a short ac ptsnce. Artificial and Natural Fertilisers. ADDRESS BY MR ROBERTSON. [Newspaper Article] — Heidelberg News and Greensborough, Eltham and Diamond Creek Chronicle — 17 November 1917

Artificial and Natural Fertilisers. ADDRESS BY MR ROBERTSON. At the last meeting of the Ivanhoe Horticultural Society, Mr Will C. lIob ertson, of the Agricultural Department, gave an interesting address on "Arti ficial and natural fertilisere." Which is the better stable manure or artificial fertilisers for use in the gar den ? This question is very often asked by enthusiastic home gardeners. .The answer cannot be given off-hand. The condition of the soil, the class of flower, the time of year, and tile objective all have to be taken into consideration. For use on most suburban soils no compari son can be made, for a deficiency in hu mus and plant food may occur. Farm yard or stable manure serves a two-fold purpose: firstly, in supplying large quan tities of organic matter for the subse quent formation of humus; and, second ly, in supplying small amounts of the essential plant foods in a moderately available condition. Its main value is its context of organic matter. Artificial fert...

THE JIKA JIKA ELECTION. [Newspaper Article] — Heidelberg News and Greensborough, Eltham and Diamond Creek Chronicle — 24 November 1917

THE JIKA JIKA ELECTION. Sir,-We got Jack Cain in after all, thanks very much to the supporters of Cr. Dennis. It looked a bit doubtful for a while before the election, but when it leaked out that Cr. May stood a very fair chance, then the vote-splitting came into play, and we soon tumbled to the game that a certain section would down May at any price. There is a nice little lot in the village of the German name, and it is a good game of see-saw they play in trying to keep in with both sides. We play our game straight, and don't think too much of men who will down a councillor for nothing. We know their value if others don't. See them smiling with us now we have got our man in. What do they care; they are out after dollars, and the public can go hang. Yours, &c., BARKLY HALL.

A POWERFUL SERMON. AT ST. JAMES CHURCH, IVANHOE. [Newspaper Article] — Heidelberg News and Greensborough, Eltham and Diamond Creek Chronicle — 24 November 1917

A POWERFUL SERMON. AT ST. JAMES CHURCH, IVANHOE. The Acting-Vicar of St. James', Ivanhoe (Rev. R. Hamilton)' preached a very powerful sermon onI' Sunday evening, Nov. 31, taking as his text Joshua.7: 6 and 10, " And Joshua fell to the earth upon his face before the ark of the Lord.:- .-\. And .God said unto Joshua, 'GetCtliee ,up;` wherefore liest thoui; thus upon thy face?''" After detailing the circum stances under which' the' wards' were spoken, the preacher pointed out the true province of prayer, that we:can not look for God's blessing without. making diligent use of- God's ap- pointed means. Simple and searching was the ian swer to Joshua's prayer. Sin. tlh re was somewliere, exposing the pepple to 'the wrath of God, and until the sinful thing was put away the wrath and defeat would remain. One act of disobedience led to Adam's expul sion from Paradise. It was onesin' which brought darkness and death into our world at' first. And -even now great mischief, sometimes dealth, wil...

The Jika Jika Stakes. [Newspaper Article] — Heidelberg News and Greensborough, Eltham and Diamond Creek Chronicle — 24 November 1917

The Jika lika Stakes. (BY "TOUCR-AND-GO.") "Well, did you back the winner," said a local man to his friend. "Of course I did," came the reply. "Do you mean to say that you voted for Cain ?" "Oh no, but I thought you were talk ing about the cup. It seems easier to pick a cup winner than an election. In any case I was out of the State, but tell me what happened." "You see, it was this way," said the local man. Mr Nationalist had two can didates in the field for the Jika Jika Stakes of £300-Mayfield and Dennis cote, while MIr Trade Hall was running Cainsnorth, and Mr Independent was having a fly with Jewellery. When the preparation commenced it was admitted that Mr Nationalist could win. Well, was there an accident ? Wait a bit, and I'll tell you. Things were going swimmingly, the investments were considered, and it was a toss-up be tween the Nationalist candidates, when some people commenced to make an analysis of the pedigrees. It was asked if a candidate bred by John Bull could comp...

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR. ELECTORS OF HEIDELBERG SHIRE [Newspaper Article] — Heidelberg News and Greensborough, Eltham and Diamond Creek Chronicle — 24 November 1917

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR. ELECTORS of HEIDEULB3ERG SHIRE Sir,-Will you permit me to thank the electors of the Heidelberg shire for the support in the recent State election. In every riding and subdivision a definite majority was given in my favor, Ivanhoe particularly, as usual, coming well to the front. I want to thank those loyalists wvho gave me their first and second pre ference votes. I regret that the seat was not held for our party. It could and would have been had a very small sec tion of Nationalists placed the Empire first and their own feelings and aspira tions second. A vicious 2nd preference vote lost the seat. To-day Jika Jika has no practical useful representation on the State Parliament. A 50 per cent vote was only polled, showing that apathy had much to do with our defeat. I am anxious to do all that I can to win back the seat at next election. Let us all for get our petty differences and throw the whole of our energies into the conscrip tion campaign, and thus in a co...

TOPICS OF THE WEEK. IVANHOE RED CROSS SOCIETY. [Newspaper Article] — Heidelberg News and Greensborough, Eltham and Diamond Creek Chronicle — 24 November 1917

TOPICS OF THE WEEK. IVANTHOE RED CROSS SOCIETY. The following valuable monetary as sistance has been received by the society from Mre A. Williams and Mro Jim anarp, who organised a Ked Cross after noon at Mr Williams residence, Fair field, and who donated the proceeds (£?13/10/) in equal shares to the Ivanhoe and Fairfield branches; from the Strol lers concert recently given in Ivanhoe, £10/19/9; and from Mrs Maggs, 12/6, being the proceeds of surplus afternoon tea money from the ladies croquet win ter meeting. The members of the society desire to tender their grateful thanks to those whose efforts and kindly interest have been the means of helping on their good work. It is by such help supple menting the regular subscriptions that the work can be carried on without let or hindrance. The Lost Election. [Newspaper Article] — Heidelberg News and Greensborough, Eltham and Diamond Creek Chronicle — 24 November 1917

CIT Dc$s. PUBLISH ED EVERY SATURDAY MORNING SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 24. The Lost Election. The unexpected happens at times, and last week the Nationalists of Jika Jika had the chagrin of experiencing it by seeing a Labor candidate defeat their nominees; and he had neither experience nor qualifications to justify his winning the seat. "Someone has blundered," quoth an elector, while many say "Some so-called Nationalists have twisted," and on the figures this seems to be correct. We can quite understand Nationalists voting Dennis and May or vice versa, but when they vote Dennis and Cain it is like running with the hare and chas ing with the hounds, But such was the case, more particularly in South North cote, and several instances have been quoted in the Heidelberg shire. Variou3 reasons are advanced for the change of front. Some bitterness was engendered into the fight by the supporters of the Nationalist candidates, and rather than see Or. May elected some gave their se cond preference t...
