As the writer is an authority upon African affairs it is particularly interesting at this juneture:— Dear Jack —In yoar la3t letter bat one you mentioned • the great interest you took in African afftirs. It is pethaps not so very singular that I also should take a very great interest in all that concerns Africa; for in a newspaper office it is hardly possible to avoid doing so. A OaMIers Lsve SiStta A BREACH OF PROMISE. At the London ...Sheriff's Court on Get. 8 a breach of promise case Smith v. Yarnall—came on for assess ment of damages. Mr. W. E. Ball, in his opening statement, said that the plaintiff, whose name was Emily Patience Smith, was about twenty-five years of age, and resided with her mother at 2, Sonbh-hili-park, Hampstead. The defendant, William B. Yarnall, was a saddler by trade, and lived at the little village of Desford, near Leicester. Miss Smith was the daughter of a first-class officer in the Customs, who died some years ago. His widow now kept a fancy shop and Miss Smith and her sisters helped in the shop. The defendant was the organist at the Noncon formist chapel, a singer of considerate local repute, and, in fact, one of the principal young men of the village.
