Our Wars and Our Victims. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 13 October 1880

Our Wars and Oar Victims. BV NE6T0E. THE English and Australian newspapers for many months past Lave been anything bat pleasant reading for persons of tender and ? humane dispositions. Even Jhe most callous amongst us must hove been satiated with the tales of war and blood&ed they have had to read. Week after week, almost day after - day, we have been pained with accounts of - daughter-sometimes on a email scale, oftencr on a larger soale-in distant parts of ' the earth, and this tort of thing has been . going on for nearly two years. It is said that the women of Paris, daring the reign of terror, became so accustomed to scenes of bloodshed, that they used to take their knit - and their needlework to the place of execution. Is the same familiarity with Serfs of violence producing the same callous ' tiess in the English character ? Certain it is 'at anyrate that we who cannot read without : disgust and shame the particulars of an Irish eviction or the details of a case of Lyn...

The Western Champion. vita title literis mors est. BLACKALL, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 13,1880. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 13 October 1880

VUa title Uterit men at. BLACKALL, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 13,1880. BEFORE pissing the turn of £128,000 placed on-the Estimates for educational purposes, a few members in the House expressed their opinions upon the prin ciples of the Act. Mr. HILL and Mr. MO&ehbad opened the proceedings, and in sensible, and moderate speeches con demned the system of national education in this colony so for as related to its costly maintenance, and to the extensive course of study provided. We quite agree with the remarks made by those i two gentlemen, especially when they [ condemn the absurdity of giving children I * high class education at the expense of | the State. No mote pernicious system could possibly be adopted, more especi ally in a young country, than that of cramming children -with a lot of miscel laneous rubbish which can never be of any possible use to them in after life. In guarding against one evil we always rush into the opposite extreme, and the ' present system of over educati...

BRISBANE AFFAIRS. FROM OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT, October 1. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 13 October 1880

BRISBANE AFFA1BS. FBOM OUB SPECIAL COBBB8P0HDEHT, October). THE topic of conversation on Saturday last was the sadden break ont of the -Avtfralian against Gresley Lukin. Yon bare of OORTSO seen the paper and the letter to which I refer, which yon will probably admit is rather worm, even for the religions press Various Explanations are given. Ono that the editor was drxmk when the letter oamo ^ut ^hi®i a8 yon nay imagine, can only be current among secular journalists. The other reason given for bis negligence is that he was engaged to religions and was com* polled to neglect hie journalistic duties. Anyhow the letter got in, and a writ has been issued for libel, £8000 damages. The editor, fitter Fonhey, has, X believe, written a private loiter of apology, but the thing will not be so easily squared. All this has arisen * out of the insurrection against the bishop . among a number of educated Catholics who writo letters to the Courier "wanting to know you knew," They credit Luldn with...
