For this ’ reason we fail to see what benefit our country could receive by their annexation. The people of Canada have never been educated up to the ideas of a republican form of government; and it is to be seriousl y doubted whether she could harmoniousl y unite with us in the government which we enjoy. Already her experience with conflicts between Church and State ought to be enough to settle with us all questions of annexation. Wh y should we wish to mix ourselves up with that disturber of peace ? for annexation would be no settlement of this question , onl y the inauguration of it. The Monte Cristo social club held a pig roast at the College Hotel on the evening of Friday, Jan. 23rd , many of the most popular students being present. After a repast a number of toasts were given and responded to, At a reasonable hour they separated after a most enjoyable time. Prof. Hamilton read a very interest ing paper before the State Board of Agricultural Jan. 27. at Harrisburg in which he discussed the subject of the Equalization of Taxes.
