Flash cagers look for opponent to fill West Coast schedule void [Newspaper Article] — The Summer Kent Stater — 4 August 1982

Flash cagers look for opponent to fill West Coast schedule void The Kent State basketball team’s trip to the West Coast this winter may still go on despite the University of San Francisco’s announcement that it is dropping its program. The Flashes were scheduled to face San Francisco’s Dons on Dec. 21 as part of a three-game West Coast trip. Also on the IJ -—■■■■■ schedule are games against St. Mary’s College (Dec. 18) and Fresno State (Dec. 23). “The West Coast trip has not been canceled,” said KSU athletic director Paul Amodio. “We are trying to set up a game against another team for that date.” Amodio said San Diego State, a member of the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference, may fill the open date. SAN FRANCISCO, a two-time national champion and a perennial power, announced last Thursday it was dropping the program because it could no longer control people who insisted on cheating to remain competitive. San Francisco officials said the decision was based on a series of violations o...

ENTERTAINMENT Singing duo conducts master classes [Newspaper Article] — The Summer Kent Stater — 4 August 1982

ENTERTAINMENT Singing duo conducts master classes By LINDA JOSEPH Staff Writer Members of the KSU Blossom Festival School Theater company had a unique opportunity this week to have experienced profes- sionals judge their talents when those well-known performers of the musical stage, Earl Wrightson and Lois Hunt, conducted master classes for the theater company. The timeless, talented Wright- son and Hunt were in Kent for performances Saturday and Sunday at the Porthouse Theater, where they presented a musical program billed as “An Evening of Broadway Musicals.” Having appeared with more than 40 symphonies and many smaller orchestras from Carnegie Hall to the Hollywood Bowl, and in countless theaters across the country, the couple is well-versed in demonstrating voice, performance, and technique. At an informal press conference Friday, the charismatic singing duo discussed their musical careers, changing musical tastes, and gave advice for beginning actors and singers. At different t...

TIDBITS [Newspaper Article] — The Summer Kent Stater — 4 August 1982

TIDBITS By MEGAN HARDING Entertainment Editor JAM NIGHT: Local musicians take over the stage at JB’s down on Wednesday nights, and the ensuing mayhem can usually be called entertaining. Last week drummer Scott Pickering (who currently plays with at least four bands) invited all of his friends to do short sets there. The “talent show” opened with Frank Barbo, of the nowdefunct Todays, in drag as Diana Ross lipped to a tape of “Stop in the Name of Love” ac companied by two female “Supremes.” Kent band Duck and Cover made their musical debut with a 40-minute set including an original described as an “Akron punk song” and their own rendition of “Victory,” a Todays tune. KSU students Bob Auf uldish (bass), Bruce Ricker (vocals), and Dave Hartman (guitar) are in the band with Pickering adding percussion. Duck and Cover has a humorous side, featuring Ricker who says he’s probably “the shortest lead vocalist since Michael Jackson started singing.” Pickering and friends say they are working ...

Vaguely Familiar shakes out danceable '60s rock [Newspaper Article] — The Summer Kent Stater — 4 August 1982

Vaguely Familiar shakes out danceable '60s rock By MATTHEW J. PRICE Staff Writer Vaguely Familiar is a dynamic new band that is shaking the Kent bar scene this summer. The band plays songs rooted in the rock and roll of the ’6os with all of the vivacity of the ’Bos and a style all their own. The five-man outfit plays cover tunes from the Yardbirds, the Troggs, the Animals and the Beatles with an intensity and feeling that makes for a good time. The sheer vitality of their music is motivation enough to dance, yet visually they are so enthusiastic that they evoke a fabulously fine atmoshpere that positively gets the joint jumping. That energy had already carried over to the crowd during their second number, Saturday night at JB’s, an electrifying version of “Shakin’ All Over.” The strength of Vaguely Familiar is their cohesiveness. Mark Kunz delivers vibrant vocals; Jeff Herwick lays down a danceable anchor on bass; Keith Pickering and Chris Candio add complementing and reverberating ...
