MY FIRST AND LAST NIGHT IN LONDON . [Newspaper Article] — New York Clipper — 18 February 1854

MY FIRST AND LAST NIGHT IN LONDON . It was in the fall of 18— , that tha ship to which I belonged , after a voyage of fonr months in the northern , Atlantic , hove in . sightof tbe Sicily Islands , and , as we . were bound for London , shaped onr course up the channel , and , in a few days ,: were anchored in the Downs . Having been short of provisions for some time back , we . wore obliged to stay and replenish . —The next day , however , we were towed- up the river , and entered the Commeroigl Dock , on the 26 th of October , 18— . It was a grand sight to me , for I had never been in London , and the city seemed to me like the world , in comparison to my humble village in the west of England . We were to be paid oft on the morrow , and I determined , as soon as I was at . liber ty , lo take a stroll to see some of the sights I had so often heard of . At twelve the next day , all hands proceeded to Leaden-hall street , and received , severally , the amount due them . There were jus...

Fromth * Portfolio of a Sportsman . A WILD HOG HUNT IN TEXAS . [Newspaper Article] — New York Clipper — 18 February 1854

Fromth * Portfolio of a Sportsman . A WILD HOG HUNT IN TEXAS . . The peccary . is easily distinguished from the other forest animals . by his rounded , hog like form and sharp snout . Although pig shaped , he is extremely active and light in his movements . The absence of a tail—for that member is represented only by a verysmall prof nberance or knob —imparts a character of lightnoss to his body . His jaws are those of a hog , and a single pair of tusks , protruding near the angles of tho mouth , gives to him a fierce and dangerous aspect . These are more certain to be seen in the old male or boam . The ears are short aud almost bnried . in the long , harsh hair , or bristles that cover the whole body , but are much longer on the back . Those , when erected or thrown forward—as is the ease when the peccary is incensed—have the appearance of a stiff mane rising all along . ^ iic neck , shoulders , and back . At such times , indeed , tho rigid , bristling coat over the whole body , gi...

From Cell ' s Life , January 8 . ENGLAND v AMERICA . [Newspaper Article] — New York Clipper — 18 February 1854

From Cell s Life , January 8 . ENGLAND v AMERICA . MR . EDITOR : I can scarcely conceive that your talented and courteous correspondent , A Yachtsman , is serious in giving what he calls the grounds for his persuasion that all improvements in our shipping are copies of Yankee notions , and that all our vessels , even when so improved , aro beaten by their great transatlantic originals . Let us just look at his grounds seriatim . First , he builds his theory on the unstable foundation of the published performances of the Soveroign of the Seas . If he means her performances as published in tho Illustrated Lnmiim AVws of the 16 th July last , allow mc , Mr . Editor , with submission , to state my conviction from internal evidence that that account is not to bo relied on ; and until they are proved by some more accurate date , I cannot , with • A yachtsman , jump to . tho conclusion that no English ship is her equal . That no ship , whether English or foreign , ever equalled her publish...

Can such things be ? [Newspaper Article] — New York Clipper — 18 February 1854

Can such things be ? The following startling disclosures in relation to abuses in the Fire Department , wc copy from the Mercury of Sunday last . If the facts are as stated , it is time the Fire Department took some action on the subject , for if these things are allowed to continue , tho good name our firemen have heretofore sustained , will give place to well grounded suspicions . Our friend of the Mercury is well posted up in affairs of the Fire Department , and we do not sec that there is any reason to doubt hia statement , but at all events wc hope the Department will inquire into it , and place the real facts before the public , At the burning ofthe ship Great Republic , we were standing on the forward portion of her deck , employed when not needed for duty , in wntchirij the operations going on around us . Capt . ELLIS , Agent ofthe Boardof Underwriters , was working with mnnly energy to protect the vessel under his charge , and lit thnt time the prospects were very fair that...
