Baird ot Alexander & Baird , orange growers and shippers o ( Beresford , Fla ., was on the street during the week dropping In from a nearby summer resort . Mr . Baird says the outlook lor the orange crop this Beason Is not very flattering . His partner , N . W . Alexander , advises that the yield for tbe whole state will hardv total more than two-thirds of last years shipments . He recently made a trip through several of the important sections and found that there Is a docided shortage at nearly all the points , some of which are greater than others . Atlanta , Ga „ Aug . 9 . —A measure to protect frlut growers of the state from the failure of railroads to furnish cars for shipments was introduced ln the senate recently by Senator B . P . Dobbs of the Thirty-fifth district . The bill provides that railroad companies must furnish cars upon notice or eighteen hours or pay penalties . The bill follows : An act to require railroad companies to furnish proper and necessary cars for the transportation of peaches , cantaloupes , watermelons , apples and other perishable products and to prescribe the terms under which they shall be furnished ; to make the railroads liable when they fail to do so , to prescribe penalties for failure to furnish cars , and for other purposes . Apple Buyer * Plentiful . Fremont , Mich ., Aug . 6 , 1907 . To The Packer : Apple buyers are quite plentiful here now , paying for Astraohan $ 1 . 50 and for Duchess 82 and furnish barrel * and do the packing . One Sarty bought 87 trees of Baldwin * and pys for $ 350 , paying 8250 down , although the apple * have not ceaBed to drop yet . In fact , winter varieties are about thirty days late this year . About onethird is grown now and In the midst ot dropping and how anyone can estimate an orchard now Is beyond me . Buyers are contracting peaches at 21 . 25 to 51 . 50 per bushel . Everything above VA IncheB goes . Most ot the big growers have already contracted and a big grow- er here is one with 2 , 000 bushels to sell .
