Feeding by the Dietrich Standard . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 February 1911

Feeding by the Dietrich Standard . At the request of the Editor , I am feeding four pigs according to the Dietrich Standard . For the test I lave selected two boars and two sow pigs , sired by Handsome Lee and out of Majestic s Bernice 3 d by Majestic Baron 106000 , one of A . J . Lovejoy & Son s herd boars . ¦ The pigs were farrowed September 12 , 1910 , Ave in the Utter : the first litter farrowed by the sow . They were well fed through the dam , she getting a slop made of equal . parts of barley rye and middlingsbarley and rye being ground—with the run of a clover field for pasture . On November 20 they were weaned and given a lot of about one-half ( y 2 ) acre , with house 5 ft . by 8 ft . to sleep in . Bedding has been changed at least once each week and oftener when thought necessary . The pigs were very thrifty and free from external parasites . Their weight , November 20 th , at ten weeks of age was 131 pounds . Turning to page 156 In Professor Dietrich s book on...

Breeds Chickens Too [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 February 1911

Breeds Chickens Too Undoubtedly many of our readers have read the Van Doren Brothers ( Poultry Specialists ) ad on another page of this issue , and recognized the name of the business manager , Mr . O . C . Van Doren . It is he who carries a quarter page ad with us , advertising his Berkshires , and the writer wishes to say he not only has some of the best to be had In Berkshires , but those men have one of the best lot of chickens I have chanced to see anywhere , in the varieties they breed . Those Columbian Wyandottes ( direct descendants from the great Madison Square Garden winners ) so beautifully marked and large in size , are a splendid lot to behqld . Their Single Comb White Leghorns win wherever shown and have been carrying off the Blues since 1897 , on this bred-in-line strain . The White Plymouth Rocks are the famous Fishel strain which needs no introduction . And those beautiful Houdans with their mottled bodies ( black and white ) nodding crests and graceful ways are a p...

VanDoren Extends His Best Wishes to His Customers . The Berkshire World , Springfield , Illinois . Gentlemen : — I am pleased to note the rapid advancement of the Interest in High Class Berkshires in the East and South . I have sent a lot of good stuff to the very best breeders . I try to give them all a square deal and they come again . I just sold a hand some boar pig sired by Baron Premier 20 th and out of Premier Belle 2 d . He goes to Mr . G . A . Riggs of Apex , N . C . Although I disliked to part with him , he was sold at a good price and wish Mr . Riggs much success . Barring accident , with proper care , he will be one of the best boars to be found In any herd and I expect to hear of much credit for him in the future . Very respectfully , O . C . Van Doren . Now this means something when Mr . Van Doren speaks so highly of a boar , for Van Doren knows a good one when he sees one . You may rememoer it was he , who won first and champion on his under six months old boar at the...

Custer ' s Ideal Too Low and Long . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 February 1911

Custer s Ideal Too Low and Long . Guys Mills , Pa . The Berkshire World , Sprigfield , 111 . Dear Sirs : —Regarding the model of the ideal hog of Mr . Custer as published in the last Berkshire World , I would rather read the opinions of the old and successful breeders than to express my own , although I am trying to decide what is the best type , and find it a very hard thing to do . I see advertisers offering the Low Down type , and the Longfellows and see many cuts of Berkshires with scarcely any nose . Mr . Custer s ideal is all of these , but is he not too low and too long , and Is he not so pugnosed that he actually could not get his nose to the ground . Since nature s law , the survival of the fittest , is immutable with hogs as well as with trees and men , it seems to me that there must soon be a limit to the change that Is being wrought in tne natural hog . With the body lengthened , and the legs shortened as in Mr . Custer s model , the hog could no longer run , and it woul...

Nothing But Good Ones Here [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 February 1911

Nothing But Good Ones Here Our offering of 60 Fall and Winter and 60 Spring gilts , and 50 sows that have farrowed one or two litters , is bred to begin farrowing February 1 st , and will farrow every week until June . All of them have good heads , and over half of them very fancy heads . They , without a single exception , have good backs , tails high , good loins and hams and extra good feet and legs . We will take out of our herds in the long run , about what we put into them . I have never used In my herd a sire or dam that did not have a reasonably good short , wide head , a good back and an extra loin . I have never used , and never will use one not extra good in feet . Weak feet I regard a great failure in any hog . I never have used a sire or dam pinched at heart or in loin , or one that was thicker through the shoulder than through the ham . My hogs are properly developed and kept in good breeding order , without pampering , and have the range of 160 acres of clover and alf...

Advertised 30 , Sold 34 [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 February 1911

Advertised 30 , Sold 34 Fairfield , Neb . Berkshire World and Corn Belt Stockman , Springfield , 111 . Dear Sirs : —Enclosed you will please find my check for $ 4 . 00 wka which to pay my ad in the Jan . issue . I must say that the advertising that I have done this year with you people has been a good investment for me . I only advertised thirty head of bred sows and gilts and have sold thirty-four , and yesterday I had to send an order back to Mississippi which had the money with it for two bred gilts . This was something I hated very much to do for it will no doubt disappoint the buyers and , too , I dislike to send money back after I get hold of it . But there is a limit to sales if one wants to stay in the business and , having already sold four more than I promised to , I think I have been fair enough and must not sell any more or I will be short of Spring pigs myself . Jesse S . Moore .

About Type . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 February 1911

About Type . Eskridge , Kas . The Berkshire World , Springfield , 111 . Gentlemen : —The January number Ot The Berkshire World was surely a very interesting one . This question of type is not liable to be settled very soon , for we all have our views regarding it . I am one that will have to be shown that a small or medium type is as profitable as the large type . If we did not have any other way to prove it , we could take the Poland China breed . A few years ago , the small or medium typed Polands were about all that were advertised . They called them quality . The farmers soon spelled quality ana typed , for the Poland breed . Old No braska still advocated the large type . How changed now ? Nearly all advertisements read the large type . Messrs . Spicer and Berry , writing in recent issues , on type , expressed my idea on the subject . And , as those two gentlemen are somewhat experienced , 1 tnink their judgment will do to tie to . I do not know what all call the medium type . A...
