One trick, though a small one, that I used to play years ago on the un suspecting has caused me many pangs of conscience while in a repentant mood. It was quite simple. I had a catch" watch; and it caught 'em, ' too. The case was made of pure gold, the metal actually being hammered into the proper shape. The works were not worth seventy-five cents; they were as cheap as could be found. But the case was very fine, and I had to carry the watch in a chamois skin pocket to prevent the soft gold from wearing away. I would take the tallow dripping that ran down on the outside of a btuss candlestick and rub it on the case of the 'catch" watch. This gave the case the ap pearance and smell of brass. As I dressed generally in th...

mmflp MW1' ;a " - THE TR"S BASIS. 1 Oa What Beits tit tfht of Women to Political SaSrafe. llecent discussions of woman suffrage in the public prints have tended to con firm the opinion I have long enter tained that the question is but imper fectly understood. Take, for example, the familiar arguments with reference to the requirement of military service. While the opponents of the proposed reform give prominence to the point that women being incapable of bearing arms, are therefore justly debarred from the suffrage, its advocates attach undue importance thereto, and do their own cause injustice by replying that jthe same is also true of large classes of men, thousands of whom remained at home during the late war. Exceptions in this, as in other cases, only prove the rule, and if woman suffrage can be sustained by no stronger or more con vincing argument, it must finally give up the contest The question is not how many, either willingly or unwill ingly, escape from military duty, but...
