It was always just before a presidential election, aud the object of the vote has been simply for campaign pur poses. When at last a republican senate voted for the measure and sout it to the house, that body promptly beat it, and when the democrats got in power1 had the president and both houses of con gress their first important official act was to take from the American silver miner the last chance of dis posing of ono ounce of his product anywhere within the limits of the United States. That is the demo cratic record on silver. Both tho democrats and republicans in the east steadily opposed silver for twenty years, while democrats and republicans of the west have steadily fought for it.
