For Farmers. The following sn estions are made for the bentwfit of planters and t.otton shippers by one who has .h handle co ton and seen its condition after reaching the seaports : mi 1st. A hale weighing over 500 lbs is urdesirable for the following reason: In handling (wvhen it is often necessary to do so in geat haste) it is liable to have the bands bursted Idr off at one or both ends, which in variably causes loss in weight be- w fore or by the time it reaches sea port or the Northern mill to which u< it may be consigned. Ihe standard weight of a merchantable bale, is 451) pounds. The planter loses by at heavy bales, as the bagging and ties usually cost less per poun,! than the cotton sells for. This is so n" evident that it is surprising that any a farmers would be so extravagant in baling his cotton, as not to put w plenty of bogging and ties on it. pl 2nd. Every bale should be securely sewed up at each head or se end with twinc. No bale should be tli considered ready for ...

Not a day should be lost during this t 'month that can po-sibly be avoided. 1 as we are apt to have violctit chang'es of weather toward its close. As soon as practicable, gather it She corn, if not done btfore. Every dry of unnecessary exposure to the weather now causes a vast increase in the number of weCviIs. Pumpkins are usually sady wasted, being left in the field as they grow, for the u.tock to ciul and waste. Tiey should be put up in rail jens, the 1 first floor raised a foot from the ground, and other 'floors laid on as the pen is tilled and raised, at about every two feet, so ihat the pump kins will not press too much on each other, and airutay circulate. When built high enough, top off with a course of crab grass hay, covering with clapboartls. In this way the pumpkin crop is made to assist, in no Flight degree, to ktep stock of all kinds in good order through the winter. See that...

Saturday, October I6, 14 8,(. Echoes from the Land of the Live Oak. Rayne Signal. A vacation spent at any pleasant place is always an enjoyable affair, 'but it is particularly, or I mnight say, supremely so; when like mry own, it is spent in t:e charining semi-rural town of Abbeville. I had been led to regard this town as the 'jumping off place of crea-i Lion," as a jealous citizeni of another rPlace recently remarked of our own thriv.ig town. Imagine, then, my srpise when upon arrival I found a village of considerable proportions, controlling a commerce that would do credit to a town of more airy pretentions than.! wot of. But I was st'll more surprised at the scenery and environuments of the place. The beautiful "Vermilion river winds 'its tortuous way past the town with its banks fringed with the dark green foliage of the live oak,'which stands in grateful relief against the surrounding ocean of foliage of a brighter 'hue. "I have never seen from the' brush of artist or the pen o...
