Page 6 MOUNTAIN LAUREL DECEMBER, 1983 a tale "Caleb, .. I seen you do scxne stupid things over the last 65 years but this takes the cake!" "Now you just hold on a minute, Henry, it weren't my fault. What was I supposed to do? The sheriff wanted to see that pig 'fore he bought it. After all, I did have an ad in the paper to sell pigs and who's idea was it to feed them pigs all that left over slop from our brandy still? Yours, you old goat!" "Old goat! Old goat! Why Caleb, I didn't have no idea you were going to the sheriff on a tour of the hog pen. You could a told 'am you done sold 'an all, but no, you take 'em by the hand and lead 'on right straight to the hog pen." "Look here, Henry, it was your idea co feed that stuff to them pigs, They'll eat all the evidence, you said. Well, they ate it all right, but that pig pen smelled like the inside of a brandy keg and there weren 1 1 a one of them pigs that could stand up. Santa without a sleigh Continued from page 1. Ed back porch where he made his workshop. There, without allowing any help, he carefully assorted, counted, stitched and decorated. His finished store of stockings might have easily been mistaken for birch fire logs stacked upon the porch. The number of his "kiddies", the cost of his operation and countless other details of his one-man generosity were secrets known only to Poppa R. They had to be substantial. But on Christmas morning instead of looking financially and physically exhausted, he wore a grin that might have been the composite smile of a dozen children. And his step was light and spry as he moved from room to room on the first floor lighting candles, plugging lights and making final arrangements of the holiday decorations. Soon Miss Lucy and other family members would be arising. Before very long the musical door chimes would announce the arrival of more of his children and grandchildren. The house would suddenly become fille...

Page 8 MOUNTAIN LAUREL DECEMBER, 1983 A Chat With Lizzie giJMkggjj «ISs A Christmas smile all year long from Lizzie Pack of Vesta, Va. A character straight out of The Beverly Hillbillies best describes Lizzie .Pack - but she like them, is no fool. When I talked with her, she carried her spontaneous watermelon slice of a smile throughout the conversation. I have yet to see her not smiling. Sixty-nine years ago, Lizzie was born in the "Rich Bent" section of Patrick County. This section is now known as Busted Rock. She has one brother, Willie, who is 74- Lizzie spent her childhood in an old log bodied house with very few comforts. The family survived by planting a large corn field and garden. They brought their grain to be ground by oxen to Uncle Buck Clifton's mill at Vesta. Uncle Buck did not charge a fee in cash, but took a toll (which is a small amount of grain in payment lor grinding.) Lizzie's school days were few. She .tended one year at the old Free Union " jhool. She walked se...

Christmas Ornaments Many people are turning their minds back to a time when Christmas was more simple and natural. I decided several years ago to make ornaments and have everything on my tree homemade. I do use electric lights but only white ones. Each year I make about a dozen or so of a particular ornament that is different from any other I have made before and place them with the ornaments made in previous years. Everyone who cones to visit while the tree is up is invited to take home an ornament from my tree to place on theirs. I have several ornaments that I treasure from friends who have given them to me also over the years and when time to get the ornaments out for decoration comes, I enjoy the memories associated with each one. Many are ornaments made when my children were small and their childish style is cherished because nothing in this world can turn back the hands of time to replace them. The angel on top is one made by my oldest daughter from an aluminum foil pie pan m...

Page 10 MOUNTAIN LAUREL DECEMBER, 1983 MOUNTAIN RECIPE When I was a child and Christmas rolled around, one of the most enjoyable parts of it was the day Mother decided to bake the fruit cakes. Our whole family was involved. My father cracked and shelled the nuts and my sister and I got to help chop the candied fruit. We were allowed to eat one whole candied cherry each and occasionally nibble a little of the other fruits and nuts. My mother usually saved several pieces of pineapple and cherries to decorate the top of the cakes. She would bake two or three at the same time for us to eat and share with other family and friends throughout the holidays. The aroma of those cakes baking on a Saturday afternoon was absolutly irrestable! Mother would bake one cake smaller than the rest and we would cut it hot, right out of the oven. It was a yearly tradition we all looked forward to from year to year. Fruit cake has been a part of traditional Cliristmas cooking since George Washington's day...

Page 12 MOUNTAIN LAUREL DECEMBER. 1983 The Mail Box Dear Staff, Enclosed find my check for $6.00. Please send me a year's subscription to your grand little newspaper, The Mountain Laurel. I ran across your paper in a convenience store in Boone, N.C. Taking it back to our motel (The Mountain Villa's) I opened it and didn't put it down until I had read and enjoyed every article in the paper. My wife, Erima, then read the paper with enjoyment. We were particularly interested in the life and doings of Bunny and Telia Mae Cockram and decided to look them up the following day. We drove north from Boone N.C. on the Parkway and as per your instructions in the November issue, got off it at Meadows of Dan, Va. Inquiring at the Exxon Station at the Parkway entrance, we found a helpful and polite attendant there who directed us to the farm of the Cockram 1 s. As usual, I missed a turn' on the unfamiliar' mountain roads and tried another also unfamiliar road. This too failed' and I was becoming ...

"Page 14 MOUNTAIN LAUREL DECEMBER, 1983 3 Generati of Christmas Memories . by Ivalien Hylton Belcher Grandnxgther, Nannie Wood Hall Mother, Gracie Hall Hylton Daughter, Ivalien Hylton Belcher (Ivalien) I remember old fashioned Christmases when I was a child. All the decorations were hand made by my Mom and Grandmother from the materials they could find. They made paper chains and used crepe paper and tin foil (saved from what ever they could find) for their trees. They always hung their stockings. My grandmother Hall said most years, she got an orange and a pepermint stick in her stocking. Once she got a little „doll. It was about six or eight inches high and was made of celluloid. It had arms and legs that moved and hair that was painted on. It wore a little red dress with a little fine lace at the neck. My mom, Gracie Hylton, says during the week of Christmas, in her childhood, they had a party and square dancing every night at a different house. Most of the time there was also a ...

Page 16 MOUNTAIN LAUREL DECEMBER, 1983 THE FIRST CHRISTMAS EVER The following is a story of Christmas but in this story, Santa is portrayed in an origional and unique way. It is a beautiful story taken from the book, "THE FIRST CHRISTMAS EVER" written by Robert W. Olmstead and published by Northwoods Press. . She was happy. Her black eyes sparkled with the sheer joy of living. She was small and slender and always in motion. She was beautiful as only a five year old can be. She was perhaps a child of the gods. Each year she danced and sang through the spring and summer. She raced the wind in fall, tumbling in happiness with the magnificent maple leaves. But when winter came, she wept. The wind was no longer her friend. It stung her and made her legs ache and her cheeks burn. She was forced to wait inside with uncertain hope and longing for the return of the warm breezes. She had seen the winter come four times, though she did not remember very clearly the first ones. As her fifth spr...
