We hope in the future to have no occasion to ask of our patrons the kmd indulgence they have so far generously accorded us. In all new enterprises there are generally some unexpected delays to be encountered before the business can settle down to a systematic working order; and these, we are glad to state have now been passed through. The NEWS will hereafter be published in Sausalito. Mr. Frank J. Burns, an experienced San Francisco journalist, has assumed the management of the paper and will devote his energy exclusively in the interest of the country and people it will represent. Having had but one day to prepare the present issue and, being a stranger at Sausalito we know that anything which may be considered faulty will be kindly overlooked. We express our gratitude to the many friends who have so cordially given us welcome and furnished us with interesting items. As to whatever may appear in the News the editor will be solely responsible, but it is the intention as far as is co...

VERNAL-INFERNAL. [Newspaper Article] — Sausalito News — 5 March 1885

VERNAL-INFERNAL. The weather at Sausalito at the present time is most delightful. At dewy morn the smiling orb of day, with rich Auroral gleams lights up the bay; plum up to the pioneer crab-catcher's place of business. And on the hillsides in the shady glen, the pretty flowers of Springtime bloom againwild mustard baby-eyes, peritonititas, sciaticars, etc. The flowers sweet fragrance woos again the bee, and happy birds are singing in each tree, except the bashful crows because they have bad colds. Anyhow, to get to the gist of the thing, this balmy weather is durn like spring. Being a stranger in these parts, we will suffer this much, but beg our Sausalito bards to be assured that we have on hand and for sale to the lowest bidder, all the Spring poetry we can run until next fall. Ads. however, are always in order. The News will make arrangements for correspondence from various portions of the county in a short time It is the determination to establish this paper permanently in Saus...

A Knights of Pythias Lodge is to be established at Sausalito in a short time. Capt. W. L. Merry and family have taken the Beasley cottage for the summer. B. B. Johnson is the roadmaster of Sausalito Township and not Mr. King as stated in last week's issue. Louis Johnson of the Marin boat house is repainting his fine score of pleasure boats for the coming season. Capt. G. W. Thomas and family have engaged a cottage for the summer, to be built for him by Mr. Slinkey. Mr. Werner Stauf and Mr Chas. Gundlach have taken Mr. W. Read's cottage and will keep bachelor's hall. The large crowds of visitors to our town last Sunday is an auspicious index of what may be expected the coming season. Leonard Story's sloop Tita, John Story, captain, is being generally overhauled, and will have new rigging and bowsprit. Mb. W. G. Barrett, Secretary of the San Francisco Gaslight Company, with his wife and daughter, have secured apartments for the season at the El Monte. Mr. E. L. Reese, late mastermecha...

SAUSALITO IMPROVEMENTS. [Newspaper Article] — Sausalito News — 5 March 1885

SAUSALITO IMPROVEMENTS. For a town of its size there are perhapsi more progressing and contemplated improvements in Sausalito than in any other place in the State. Turning a deaf ear to the doleful cry of "hard times" every one seems to have determined to contribute as much as possible to the general improvement of their town, and the beneificial result is manifested in the general cheerfulness and good humor of the people. Very few if any need long be unemployed, and business has not susceptibly felt the general depression elsewhere complained of. An important move in the advancement of Sausalito, and one evidencing assurance in its future, will, we understand he made the coming summer by D. P Belknap, in the erection of ten dwellings on the tract of land which he has purchased at Old Sausalito above the reduction works. The plan will be to allot one acre of Iand to each dwelling. Another auspicious enterprise is the opening by J. S. Bellrude of a lumber, brick and general building...

ROD AND GUN. [Newspaper Article] — Sausalito News — 5 March 1885

ROD AND GUN. The open season tor quail, partridges, rail and grouse ended last Saturday and any person found guilty of violating the law on this subject will be compelled to pay a fine of Trout fishing will begin in another month and the anglers are already turning their attention to the prolific streams of Marin. In the Throckmorton lagoon salmon trout are caught freely. Point Tiburon is rapidly coming into prominence as a fine fishing and hunting ground and both nimrod and angler can find a good day's sport at their favorite pastimes. Off Point Blunt, Angel Island, has also been found to be a good place to fish, and a visit to Red Bock or Arch Rock will also repay the angler if he takes it at low tide. Sausalito still receives the attention in this respect that it has in years past, notwithstanding that facilities have recently been made which open up new sporting localities. Duck shooting has been good along the shore here during this week, the birds coming in close to feed on th...

THE WHITEHALL CAPSIZED. [Newspaper Article] — Sausalito News — 5 March 1885

THE WHITEHALL CAPSIZED. Chas. Clark and a friend came to Sausalito from the city on Tuesday and hired a Whitehall boat to take a sail. After several hours of exploring the bay they attempted as their return trip the passage of Raccoon Straits, when their boat filled with water and was capsized. For about an hour they say, they clung to the bottom of the craft, and were nearly letting go their hold from exhaustion when they were rescued. Both are now confined to their homes in San Francisco with symptoms of pneumonia.
