Our Vnnfcee Girl* [Newspaper Article] — Daily Alta California — 26 December 1849

Our Yankee Girls -- BY G. W. HOLMES. Let greener lands and bluer skies, If such the wide earth shows, With fairer cheeks and brighter eyes, Match as the star and rose ; The winds that lift the Georgians veil, Or wares Circassia's curls. Wafts to their shores the sultan's sail -- Who beats our Yankee girls ! (Space) The gay grisette. whose fingers touch Love's thousand cords so well ; The dark Italian, loving touch, But more than one can tell, And England's fair-haired, blue-eyed dame, Who uinds her brow with pearls ; Ye who hare seen them can they shame Our own sweet Yankee girls ! (Space) And what if court or castle raunt !ts children loftier bore ! Who herds the silken tassels flaunt Beside the golden corn ! They ask not for the dainty toil Of ribboned knights and earls The daughters of the virgin soil, Our freeborn Yankee girls! (Space) But, every hill whose stately pines Wave their dark arms above The home where some fair being shlnes, To warm the wilds with love. From harvest r...

Sonoma Course Race for $10,000.— are indebted to a friend for an account of the race which came off on Thursday the 20th instant at the Sonoma Course between J. M. Hedspeth's bay horse Doctor and Andreas Pico's bay horse . The race was for $5,000 a side, 600 yards, p.p. The Course was just outside the town on a level plot of ground, but, owing to the heavy rains, the track was very muddy and slippery. The day was very unpropitious a sharp rain having set in in the morning and continued during the race. Notwithstanding rain, however, there wore live or six hundred persons on the ground who exhibited much interest in the contest. There wore very few bettors but what bets were made were heavy, and, though the Doctor was the favorite, no odds were given. Judges were appointed and took their.respective stations, the track was cleared and the nags brought up to the "scratch." The word "go" was given several times but it was "no go," tho Pico horse baulking which caused a recall. Finally t...

The Fire—A Great Characteristic. On the ground burned over by the disastrous fire of Tuesday last extensive preparations are being made, we are happy to remark, for immediate rebuilding, and in a style of beauty and grandeur, equally worthy, with the former structures, the enterprising and spirited proprietors of this valuable part of our city domain. The *ruins*— if so the ashes of a block of framed buildings may be termed—are being rapidly cleared away, and already many of the former sites are occupied by temporary tenements, filled with the goods rescued from the flames. But even more indicative than all this of the undismayed spirit of enterprize, possessing energy and ability equal to any emergency, which is so peculiarly characteristic of the citizens of San Francisco—we notice with pride and pleasure the almost magic appearance of some four or five house frames, erected on the burnt space, two of which are actually *shingled* and *sided up*. We shall expect to find them compl...

PLACER INTELLIGENCE < <irrr»|WMi«l< ni« of »lt«- AUx California. Hawkin's Bar, Tuolumne River, Dec. 15. Gentlkmen, — Now and* then a stray number of your valuable paper finds its way to the Tuolumne, and very soon you may expect to receive orders for several copies to be forwarded to regular subscribers at this place. A post office agency has been established both hero and at Jacksonville, and as soon as the heavy rains of winter are over, newspaper packages can be forwarded: very securely from Stockton. Although but little is said of the Tuolumne diggings, I consider them the very best in California. Woods, Sullivan's, and Curtis's creeks a/o all tributaries of the Tuolumne and form a junction with it at Jacksonville, seven mile* above this place. Several companies were formed in September and October last, for the purpose of turning the ri\er at various points, ana most of them were in full tide of success when the early and heavy raiiißsetin. The Fire at Stockton. The following comprehensive report of the late fire at Stockton is the only authentic account received by us, and for which we are indebted to our friend WALTER HERRON, Esq. We have not the means in our power of ascertaining any individual losses, or even the general loss, but understand that $150,000 will about cover everything. Stockton, Dec. 24, 1849. Gentlemen :— Last night this place was visited by a severe calamity. A fire broke out between the hours of 11 and 12 o'clock in rear of the Arcade, and soon raged with tremendous violence, extending itself to several of the adja- cent buildings, and notwithstanding the most extraordinary exertions ended in the destruction of the Arcade, Verandah, Grayson & Stephens' store, a very large new frame building not quite finished, belonging to a colored man, and one or two smaller houses ; Mr. E. Lane's house was saved by the most unremitted exertions ; the St. Charles was in actual contact with the broad ...
