This is a binding machine which packages the bricks into bundles for shipment. —Times Photo ELGIN—Since 1882. the city of Elgin has been associated with brick- making; in fact, it has been called the "Brick Capital of the South- west." There are two brick companies in Elgin today, Payne Brick Com- pany and Elgin Butler Brick Company; in earlier days of the town's his- tory there have been three other brick companies here. One was the Elgin Press Brick Company, established in 1897 and ceased manufacturing in 1912, when clay supplies in their area east of town dwindled. Another was the Lasher Brick Com- pany, which was located on what is now the Bastrop Highway. Lasher Brick was in operation from 1906 to 1912. The third company was the Elgin Standard Brick Company, which merged with Elgin But- ler in 1969. Several building...

N78 Tracksters fl Prepare In Practice This year s Tiger track team is not very large in number, but the speed and determination exert- ed by these few young men and women is enough to give Smith- ville a good chance to show in the various area track meets. Coach Tommy Klaer- ner is the supervising tfack coach for the boys team. Coach Karen Fitch will direct the womens team. Track meets will be held throughout March in Gonzales, Hays, La- Grange, Blinn College in Brenham, and other area tracks. The track around the football field has been graded and leveled out tor the tracksters to begin their rigorous daily run- ning practices.
