J. a. SUNDAY • • ••«•••• FEB. 17. 1878. Sherman's Gframe. wmmmmmmm Buell, the able correspondent of the New Orlean* Democrat, presents a clear expose of Sherman's game. He aays Sherman & Co's. message to Anderson has created a feeling of most intense disgust among the Democrats of Washington, for every- body understands that Sherman's object is to keep Wells and Ander- son quiet by holding out the false hope, succor or rescue : Sherman's theory is, that if Wells and Anderson can be kept quiet un- til after they are both convicted and in the penitentiary, their revelations will not have so much weight as now, when the whole public is ex- pecting them and prepared to believe them. Sherman knows very well that the hopes he holds out are delusive, and that the United States courts can do nothing. It will be wonderful if John Sherman, after having by promise of protection duped Wells and Anderson into the commission of their crime, should now succeed in duping them into silence by ho...

MRS MmMVWSniw1 WPP# pews. DKNISON. SUNDAY MORNING. and then- 1 found myself ' in a valley. I walked along until I came to a terrible, dark, black river, at sight of which 1 shuddered and feared. Before nie and beyond the river was a black cloud. Others were walking over the river, and, although I dreaded it, some- thing urged me ^>n, and I felt that 1 had to go with the others. As I got nearer to the dark cloud it became bright and "beautiful, and expanding it opened aiul disclosed the most beauti- ful sight. The first I saw was .Jesus. I saw a great temple and a great throne. 1 saw my little boy, who was drowned two years ago, and my other dead child. Isaw my dead wife; but I could not touch them, t saw people whom I had almost forgotten. I saw my old gray-haired grandfather, who died when I was but two years old. There were many whom Olive Logan's Gossip About Mrs. Lord. Hicks pointment I felt when I found myself again in bed. 1 felt, indeed, grieved. It was 11 o'clock when I r...

1)13 NI HO JN, TUESDAY FEB. yj 1878. The number of Roman' Catholic cardinals is sixty-five. Sixty were appointed by the late l'opc. The majority [of the cardinals are Italians, and they virtually control the church. We see by the papers that a Ger- man gardener is going into the busi- ness of growing vegetables for ship- ment north, near Austin. He pro- poses to raise water from the Colo- rado river by steam power, and irri- gate twenty or tlyrtv acres. According to a decision rendered by Judge White in the Court of Ap- peals at Galveston last week, the State law taxing dogs is constitu- tional, notwithstanding dogs arc not J property. Under the State law ev- ery family is allowed one dog tax free. The editor of the Bonham News has been shown a private letter from Hon. D. B. Culberson, in which that gentleman states that nobody has authority to say that he will not be a candidate for re-election to Congress. This means, of course, that he is a candidate.
