~— Page 10 Feature Section Can I still get my VA hospitalization? By Leonard J. Hansen Copley News Service Q: I am concerned about the re- ported budget slashing at the Vet- erans Administration. As a veter- an with a service-connected dis- ability I will want access to the hospital system that was promised to me. What is the story0 — M.G., San Mateo, Calif. A: There is no reduction of hos- pital or health benefits to veterans with service-connected disabili- ties. Rceent changes in VA hospi- talization programs affect veter- ans without service-connected dis- abilities - and it is not a cutback of available services but the intro- duction of some charges to help offset the costs of providing the medical services to veterans who do not qualify otherwise. Actually, the VA is in good fi- nancial shape. A recent report by the Veterans Administration docu- ments its annual budget at $27 bil- lion - that's about $6 billion more than was budgeted in 1980. "This year's funding level involv...

Slavery went out more than a century ago! By Willard Abraham Copley News Service Q. I recently read the letter in your column from the mother who feels like a slave "owned" by her children. I feel this way quite often. I have two sons (10 and 18), also a 21-year-old daughter and a 19- |month old granddaughter. My daughter got a divorce a year ago and asked us if she could move back home because she was un- able to make it on her own. Since then my work has dou- bled. Now I have two more to pick up for. She will not turn her hand to do any work around here, but neither will the 18-year-old son. I can get a little help from my 10- year-old but he complain? all the time. My husband told the two older kids that they would have to pay $50 a month for room and board which helps financially, but I would prefer their physical help around the house. Their rooms are a disaster, and I am a built-in baby sitter. Talking about slaves, I feel like one for sure! Not only that, but it bothers me he...

Qie Sentinel VOLUME 12. NO. 15 (214) 530-1100 SACHSE, TEXAS PUBLISHED WEEKLY MAY 20, 1987 * I I Plans Under Way For Single Zip Code Post Office officials presented the program in May at the Chamber of Commerce meeting. L-R are Colleen Goodwin, director of field operations for the Dallas division; Garland Postmaster John Billimek; Bill McKee from the Wylie Post Office; CofC President Joyce Yandry; and Terry Rockett, systems expert from the Dallas office. Plans are under way for Sachse to be identified with one zip code instead of the present two, according to Post Office offi- cials who spoke at the Chamber of Commerce meeting May 12. First, however, it must be deter- mined whether residents want their mail delivery to continue out of Wylie or Garland, and the re- quest must be in before the July deadline to speed the process along. Zip code requests are sent to Washington only twice a year - in July and January. Also, the information could be added to the next Mapsco Direc- tory whi...

Page 10 Feature Section It's a cop-out to put blame or credit on parents! By Willard Abraham, Ph.D. Copley News Service Q. Some good friends of ours have such guilt feelings because they have been made to feel it is their fault that their son is autis- tic. Mutual friends have told them that such children result from parents who haven't shown enough affection toward them. This kind of comment is espe- cially tragic because the parents involved are sensitive, loving and supportive toward all three of their children. Is there any validity at all in the statements that have been made to them? I don't think so, but your comments might be very helpful. A. It is a cop-out to put the total blame (or credit) on parents for how their children develop. Whether it is autism, mental re- tardation or giftedness, other fac- tors may be involved.
