MAIL CALL Xofi V hf aWa-" 'JE jKm 1 Iqwh c&SnStSIBfHBawHH -H"! Of all the rituals that college students must perform the daily venture to their mail box is an experience everyone shares. Little is known by most of us about how those refreshing pieces of mail reach our boxes. For that matter little is know about those people who make sure the mail is in our hands as soon as possible except for the brief encounters we have with them when we have to purchase a stamp for that letter going home or the phone bill. CLOCKWISE FROM THE TOP-1) A dissapointed hand reaches hopefully only to find the common empty box. 2) Lyn Goodlln looks on as Mike Jackson reads a welcome letter from home. 3)The most common task for postal worker Mark Burrts Is selling stamps. 4) Postal clerk Joyce Jones and employees Teresa Smith and Elaine Davidson discuss a unique piece of mail as Carolyn Collins sorts the day's deliveries. 5) After the incoming mail is sorted it's up to the people like Teresa Smith to p...

1985Pduc briefly... International Focus RLAfA February. Jimmy Sammy and Joe Shin have been so Involved at HSU that they may not need an In- troduction . Born in Seoul the capital city of Korea they made up part of the 10 million city population. Thir- teen years ago they suffered culture shock when they moved from cold winters to hot humid Bangkok Thailand. There the predominantly Buddhist popula- tion offered gifts of freshly-cooked meals to the dozens of saffron -robed monks who pass house doorways each morning and everything else about Thailand was just as different. (In a similar way to Mormon young men who spend two years in unsalaried mis- sionary work before beginning professional life young men in Thailand are expected to serve three years in a Buddhist monastery before they can hold a good place in business or political life.) From Thailand the Shins moved to America another culture shock. In Seoul Mr. Shin had worked for an American group called "Compassion" which suported...

Page 10 REATA February 1985 Upset: HSU stops Samford 66-62 last week in wild TAAC contest Alex Harris drew a crucial charging foul from Samford's George Green with 23 seconds left in the game to preserve a wild 66-62 victory over Samford last week in the Mabee Complex. Of the play Harris said "I was just looking for someone to come my way " It seemed as if the HSU men were looking for someone to "come their way" the entire game as they totally dominated play from a tempo-outlook and took the Bulldogs of Samford right out of their game. Coach Dick Danford's game plan called for a slow deliberate offense and a tightly-packed 2-3 zone defense. Samford as a team was averaging somewhere around 80 points per game with their aggressive running style Danford also only used six players in the game. However the key could have been holding All-American Craig Beard to 26 points 14 coming off their fastbreak. Lenard Brooks led the Cowboys with 17 points two coming at the end of the first half on...

oped he REATA April. 1985Page 3 Wll this time two weeks from now school will be over the last finals will have been taken and everyone will have said their "good- byes" and "have a good summer." Professors and Instructors will be madly computing students' final averages and they may even decide to hold a few students back because they enjoyed them so much. Ah yes the good 'ole summer time. In Abilene. Now that's ex- citing. I often wonder why I am so anxious to get out of school I'm not going anywhere. Now maybe if I were going back home to France or even Houston maybe then I could Justify my elated feeling. But no here I'll remain. Several people have asked me where I'm moving when I graduate. To their utter disbelief 1 have always replied "Why nowhere... I'm stay- ing here In Abilene " "You're staying here?" they'll ask; "but you're graduating... that means you can leave now you've done your time. Do you actually like It here?" Okay I've got something to admit. I have to stay here...

On Thursday April 28 Hardln-Simmons University is sponsoring its third annual Western Heritage Festival and will remember a time when the horse and buggy took the place of the car and shoeing horses and branding cattle were a way of life. One hundred years ago ranching and herding cattle were a way of life for many people all over the country especially in the Abilene area. sports Th REATA April 1985Pag 7 Time Out by Jimmy Pogue Now that the NBA playoffs arc In full swing 1 can honest- ly say I believe that this year' playoffs are going to be the beat ever. Look at what's happened so far: Cleveland is giv- ing the defending champion Boston Celtics all they can handle. Houston is deadlocked with an Inferior Utah Jazz team. Philadelphia Los Angeles Milwaukee and Detroit all have commanding leads in their series. Who do I pick to win It an? The Lakers. I know that I probably jinxed them by picking them to win as I did Oklahoma but I am putting my picking power on the line this time. I think the Lakers should put It all together because they are superior to any team at any position. At 38 years old Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is still the best center in the game. I'll grant all you 76er fans that Moses Malone is tough and I'll grant all you Celtic fans that nobody runs the break like Robert Parish but If you get down in the clutch and you have to have a bucket who...

Students often seem to have beenspoon-fed in high school and in college are more nearly on their own. The transition is difficult for lots of beginning college students. Even after setting up times for study some students miss the point. I have heard many com- plain that they read their course notes and text-books and yet do poorly on tests. The problem here seems to be the lack of tightly focused attention on which study calls for. Speed reading and casual reading of the kind used in reading the newspaper are not adeguate for most college study. Reading must be done with heightened concentration. It is appropr...
