Sheep Dog Tria A local trial was held on the Alexandra showgrounds on Wed nesday of last week. The fixture was a preliminary to the forth- - coming trials at Geelong. Miss Birtchenell, Gembrook,. Mr. Mooney, Seville, Mr. J. Dean, Euroa, and Mr. and Mrs. Beat son, Yea, were in attendance. Quite a number of young dogs competed. Altogether 25 entries were received. Mr. T. V. Wilmot, of Alexan dra, gained first and second prizes in one trial, with Mr. J. Os motherley, Alexandra, first, and Mr. C. Cooper, Alexandra. sec ond in the other trial. The judging of the trials was .eapably carried out by Mr. R. II. Blackbu:-n. Mr. D' ':n congratulated Mr Osmotherly on his win and pre" sented him with a trophy (dona ted by the speaker). The sheep, an excellent lot were loaned by Mr. J. McRae, of Molesworl '1. Mrs. Blackburn aid Miss Tait kindly supplied the -afternoon tea, which was much apprecia ted by all. The committee wish to thank everyone who assisted at the trials.

Although Aloxandra failed to de feat Mansfield in the semi-final match at Euroa, that did not lower their spirits at the dinner given by eight business men of Alexandra, held at the Shamrock Hotel on Tuesday night of last week: Members of both first and second teams were guests. WARANGA-NORTII-EASTERN ASSOCIATION Broadford 7-11, defeated Mans field 4.8 iu the final match at Euroa last Saturday. To-morrow Thornton-Acheron Valley meet Broadford in the grand final match at Euroa. The former. team are confient of vic tory. I'he are fielding a strong team. Having defeated Broad ford in the second semi-final Thornton-Acheron Valley firmly believe they can repeat the dose on Saturday next. However, win, lose or draw, we extend our cougratulations to T.A.V. on reaching the position of playing in the grand final. ®- ---- In the Maroondah Highway League Mansfield 8-13, defeated Bonnie Doon 7-9 in the grand final match played at Alexandra last Saturday. In the first quart er Mansfield scored 2-4, and Bon nie Doon 4-4. In the second quarter Mansfield scored 2-2, Bonnie Doon 0-3. Mansfield reg istered 3-2 and Eonnie-Doon 0(-2. The last ,quarter saw Mansfield score 4-5, and Bonnie Doon 3-0: The play was of a scrambly nature and lacked any good per formance as far as good...

FOUGHT SHARK WITH BARE .HANDSJ" HEROIC RESCUE ,IDo FAILHED. James Howard, 34? barman, was fatally mauled by a shrtlk while swim ming about 35 yards from the beach at Yorkey's Knob, near Cairns, on Sunday last. A friend of the victim, Brian Ware, a pupil surveyor, of Alexandra, made a gallant attempt to.,save. Howard, and was scratched across the chest and stomach* by the shark as he dragged Howard to the:.beach. Howard received severe lacerations to the right leg. His hands were also. badly mauled as he" tried .to fight off the man-eater. Howard was still alive when he was. brought ashore, but"died while being taken .to hospital.: Ware and a girl, Miss Ruth Mpule, of Freshwater, who was ten yards from Howard, were both admitted to hospital, but were expected to be dis charged on Monday.
