THE FEDERAL CAPITAL IN SYDNEY. DISASTERS TO N. S. WALES. [Newspaper Article] — Eden Free Press and Eden District Advertiser — 15 March 1899

THE FEDERAL CAPITAL IN SYDNEY. DISASTERS TO N. S. WALES. Toe "Age" thus points out the dis astrous results to N. 8. Wales of the Federal Capital being in Syd ney :— We shall have to be very careful, while we enjoy permanently ah the advantages of being the centre of the new Federation, that wo do not accept the position formally, he cause that would entail the cutting of Melbourne out of th§ colony of Victoria and handing it over with all its wealth to the Federation. From this point of view may we not gently suggest to the disconsolate Sydneyites that in losing the Feder al Capital they have made a groat gain. Let them think for a moment what a fato would have overtaken them had the Federal Capital been lixed in Sydney and that city made into Federal territory. The 400,000 people in the city would have been excised from the population of New South Wales, the voting strength of the tnrther colony would have been at once reduced by aliuoBt one-third. The "Beautiful Harbor" would have...

Original Correspondence. To the Editor of Hie Eden Free Prets Sir,—Being in sympathy with tho de tiro of your townspeople that Eden ehould beo-me popular as a health resort, I would like to »oo something done to render the town more attractive iu various ways. For instance, oould not something be done towards bringing about the re I moral of the tumble-down old buildings which are luch an eyesore to visitors to tho town? Then aa attempi might be made to provide baths for the convenience I of the public, and for this object an ap peal to the wealthy landowners, who would bonefit by their establishment, ought to meet with a liberal response. VimtorB would also like to see the plant ing of the street* with trees continued during the coming winter, then tbe streets would look more attractive if they were le»9 infested with straying stock, and eurely the Commons trualees or the police, whiohever is tbe proper authority, eould BOolisb this nuiganoe.
