Local and General. [Newspaper Article] — The Murrurundi Times and Liverpool Plains Gazette — 7 August 1875

Local and General. The Weather. — In the early part of the week a somewhat unseasonable degree of warmth marked the temperature of the dis trict, but a natural reaction took place on Tuesday evening, when we were visited by a storm and liaiL accompanied by thunder, lightning, and high n^rth-wcsterly winds, combining u. form a battle of the elements such as we have seldom witnessed. For some time it seemed aa if an ocean liad been dis charged from aerial heights upon our hapless neighbourhood, while hail falling almost as generally around, was driven by the wind into heaps or lay thickly over the country. The fury of the ettrm was'not wholly ex pended by the violence of this commotion, and on the following day there were indica tions nf its recurrence, bnt the weather hns gradually regained a natural condition, and lieyond the ordinary variations of appearance, nothing worthy of remark has since'been ob served. It is probable, however, that tidings of serious injury to agricultural i...

Stand from Under. [Newspaper Article] — The Murrurundi Times and Liverpool Plains Gazette — 7 August 1875

Stand from Under. There are few sights more gratifying than that of a country school in remote and thinly peopled districts. It is an unenviable mind that feels no emotion when looking at twenty, thirty, or forty children assembled in the rough but homely building, put together by the combined exertions of those whose ideas are in advance of their possessions. Yes, it is s sight to be remembered, this witnessing the really earnest industry of youthful scholars after their long journeys through a lonely bush, or along more dismal roads. Such a sight we witnessed at a school not mote -than ten miles from Murrurundi, but our pleasure was greatly qualified by some ac companying and unnecessary circumstances. The school house had been substantially : built of slabs, and neatly furnished with desks and other appliances, bnt between every slab there gaped a chiok from floor to roof, through which the winter wind made wanton sport, and banished eeery possibility of comfort. A brave young 'h...

The Governor and the Chief Justice. [Newspaper Article] — The Murrurundi Times and Liverpool Plains Gazette — 7 August 1875

The Coiernor and the Chief Justice. Sib James Mabtln has committed a good many blunders in his life, and has been -made more than once to pay the price of 'them. His impulsive, imperions, and un- i governable temper sets at aefiance not only '. the counsels of wisdom but the simplest die- ; tates nf common sense. Error he is utterly ' incapable of, since he thinks himself infalli ble, and if wrongly represented as having ?aone a thing corflcmnea1 Ijy the world in ?genera], he bursts out 'in furious indiguationi and commits the veriest follies. The last act done by him, which has raised a perfect storm of indignation against his unwise pre cipitancy, was theletter addressed by him to the Herald, animadverting on the version ?given by the Governor of an interview that toolc place between tbcm on the Enbject of Gardiner's relea.ee.
