TO CORRESPONDENTS. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 8 April 1848

TO CORRESPONDENTS. We have received " Solo's " letter, but it is not sufficiently general for publication ; he would find it difficult, as we do, to write when there is abso- lutely nothing to write about, except, perhaps, sub jecls already worn threadbare-the " Carpet Bag" is much resorted to by all colonial Journals.

Floating of the "Great Britain" Steamer. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 8 April 1848

Floating of the "Great Britain" Steamer. At length this stupendous ve&sel, after lying stranded in Dundrum-bay since Sep- tember last, has been floated from that rocky coast, and is now once more safe in dock at Liverpool. Her rescue is consi- dered to be one of the most successful la bors of engineering skill on record ; not even excepting the floating of the Gorgon steam-frigate at Monte Video. The 28th of August was fixed upon for the final at- tempt to transport the, noble vessel across the Channel ; and preparatory to that, the engineers in charge of the operations had fitted up upwards of 40 pumps, quite suf- ficient to keep the vessel afloat, if effici- ently manned, although her size were twice what it is, One pump, which Mr. Brem- ner had brought on board, throws no less a quantity of water than three tons a mi- nute. As soon as the tide rose,'the hands on board, consisting of the majority of the crew of the Scourge frigate, and a portion of the Birkenhead, commence...

Proprio Mota Decree of the Pope. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 8 April 1848

Proprio Mota Decree of the Pope* The Semaphore de Marseilles of the 20th of Oct., publishes the following important proprio motu, promulgated by the Pope on the 15th :-" When by our circular of the 19th of April last, we announced our in- tention to choose and call to Borne res ?ectable persons from each province of the 'ontifical dominions, our object was to form a Council of State, and thus endow the Pontifical Government with an insti- tution justly appreciated by the other European Governments, and which, in former times, constituted the glory of the states of the Holy See, a glory due to the genius of the Boman pontina. We are persuaded that, when assisted by the ta lent und experience of \. . .» with the suifragcs of entire <-, will be easier for us boldly to vaii*. the, administration of the country, a ^ part to it a character of utility, whic the object of our solicitude. The Chinese Junk. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 8 April 1848

The Chinese Junk. The junk, the Key-Ting, which arrived at New York on the 8th of July, excited there the greatest curiosity. Her light and graceful build, her saüs of matting suspended to her bamboo yards, her smooth and rapid movement-thanks to which, if we [may believe the Chinese crew, they have never suffered from bad weather-in short, the singularity of the furniture, which includes some dogs with tongues as black as ink, brought by the captain, all combined to attract a crowd of spectators. The prettiest women of New "York loved to boast of having visited the Chinese junk. Unfortunately the enterprise does not appear to have had the same success in a pecuniary respect. The Chinese sai- lors, to the number of twenty-six, not having been paid their wages, have ar- * rested the vessel, and Mr. Lord, their ad- vocate, has pleaded for them before the civil court of the district. The crew claim, in the first place, their arrears of wages from the month of September, 1846 : and in t...

The Financial Crisis in England. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 8 April 1848

The Financial Crisis in England. Much as has been said and written on this subject at home, our readers will not perhaps be unwilling to see how it is re- garded by enlightened foreign observers. The following article is from the Allge- meine Zeitung. "A faint light is gradually dawning upon the financial crisis and commercial chaos , which now desolates the city of London, and, we may add, England in general. But even this light is not cheering, for it shows that even if the failures may be pretty nearly at an end, the effects thereof must still be felt for a considerable time. It is now sufficiently shown that the scarcity of money, caused principally by the immense importation of provisions, and also by the failures in the corn trade, has occasioned the eruption of an old sore. This is the   way in which old houses, like Reid, Irving & Co., Gower & Co., &c, carried on their Business.         ...

The Editor of this Journal invites the free expres- sion of the opinions of his Correspondents, but can- not be held responsible for them. The name and address of the writer must accompany each com- munication. To the Editor of the "Independent Journal." Sir,--At the meeting of the Legislative Council, held on the 22nd instant, I counted six Irishmen sitting, and, bye and bye, there will be a seventh, when the new Governor arrives. I have no ob- jection to Irishmen, but it struck me forcibly that Englishmen and Scottishmen ought to have their sway in Western Australia without bowing the knee to Ireland. England and Scotland have been as one nation for a long period of years. It seems there are objections to natives of these countries, best known to the reigning powers here. I distinctly tell you that I view with indiffe- rence the politics of the day, but, as I soon leave the colony I could not help passing these remarks, and have only to add that as all our distresses &nbsp...

Vineyard Company. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 15 April 1848

Vineyard Company. The following prospectus of the propo- sed Vineyard Company, drawn up by Mr. Austin, was read and unanimously appro- ved of, at the late meeting of the Vineyard Society, and a committee, consisting of Messrs. G. Shenton, J. G. Austin, J. Pur kis, and Signior Caporelli, was appointed to take the necessary preliminary measures for forming a company upon the plan. A company of the nature now proposed, has long been a desideratum; although perhaps it does not hold out such alluring prospects as many others which have been at times brought forward, to tempt colo- nists to the venture, yet we think we may venture to predict the benefits realizeable, both by the proprietors and the colony at large, have never been exceeded. It is not one of those fascinating half-gambling ven- tures which promise untold wealth to the speculator, but it will be a steady and, we believe, a really profitable concern. Its hopes are founded on what we already know the colony to be capable of: ...

; ' "' THE ITOEPErtDENT JOURNAL. .if. C'~ WonpopuU,vo)e Ed" THE Government Gazette of the 11th inst. announces two facts ; the deficiency of the ¡postage receipts to meet the expense of the department, and the remedy. Al- though the particular section of the estaba listíment in which the deficiency occurred is no£ mentioned, it is well known to every one, that it can only be found in the dis tributipn of letters internally. The ex- ternal communication is of small compar- ative labour and expense. The vast impor- tance to the welfare of the community of keeping, to its highest possible extent, its intercourse with the civilized world, being so obvious and the duty and prac- tice of all enlightened Governments being to render facile, inexpensive, and constant this connection, it is difficult to conjecture, on what r...
