N.T. Racing Club. [Newspaper Article] — The North Australian and Northern Territory Government Gazette — 27 July 1889

N.T. Racing Club. The annual meeting of 1889 is now over and done with. The events have been run out, the winners declared, and, what is still more important, the various cheques have been handed over to thc several winners, and, we trust, cashed to the satisfaction of thc lucky holders. From a sporting point of view the meeting was quite as successful as it was expected to be ; yet on the whole the interest created was not so keen as last year, when matches wore plentiful and money to be had for the asking. The "railway" element was absent; there was no Baxter to put np £500 or £1000 to back his horse, and no'Cygnet to carry his colours. On the contrary, the meeting was a very quiet one, though nono the less agreeable for that, and perhaps we ai'e not going too far when we say, that taken all in all, the racing was an improvement on 1888. Our most serious drawback is thc paucity !of owners of horses. Last year the prizes were evenly distributed between Messrs. Baxter, flaimes, Cook...

^Iic failli ^«ülralian. ami Xort/ier» Territory Goreramnit Gazette. SATURDAY, JULY 27, 1889. IN* another column we present our readers with a little statistical return which we think will prove uuusually acceptable to those whose faith in thc Northern Territory is still staunch. The tabulated returns to which wc desire to direct attention represent the quantities, descriptions and values of the exports from the I Territory over the Queensland bor- der during a period of six months, I up to 30th June of the present year. However astonishing it may seem, it is nevertheless a fact that this is the first instance that we know of where the border returns have been sup- plied, to the Customs Department, and it is a not unreasonable iufer i euee that had the occasion not arisen i foi* the establishment of a police ! patrol at Camooweal we would still be in complete ignorance of our ovcr-thc-border export trade. The figures themselves show how eager we should be for a complete Customs syste...
