AUSTRALIAN CLERKS' PROVIDENT-SOCIETY. [Newspaper Article] — Sydney Chronicle — 5 August 1846

AUSTRALIAN CLERKS' PROVIDENT SOCIETY. This Society,'one of the most useful in the Colony; is we are glad to perceive ina flourishing, condition, and is now likely to go onvery prosperously. On the 22nd of July, a general meeting of the'Society was held at the Royal Hotel, and from the Secretary's report then read, it appeared, that although ,a large increase had not been made in the iumbers of members, yet that the Institution was progressing. The Report then went on to recommend the aban donment of class 1 of the society, 'which: provided for clerks who were out of employment, on the ground that so few personis had joined that class, and 1: being one unsafe in its principles.. Thley further proposed that the objects of the 'Institution should for the future be.the affording to clerks and, others the means of making provision for themselves in sickness, or for their widows or families at their decease; also for distressed members, their widoiws or children, which last class would be...

Dean I'Encroe in the chair. The CuasaxAN said, in commencing the business of St. Patrick's Society, that he was happy to see so large a number of the friends of St. Patrick present that evening, and though they. were met for religious and pious purposes, he could not avoid reminding them that the present was the first meeting of the society after the arrival of the new Governor, Sir Charles Fitz Roy, who had safely arrived that evening, andi who he trusted would .governi the Colony in justice and equity, and by walking straightforwardly in the footsteps of his predecessor, administer the afihirs of the Colony for the good of the - whole community. Anew era in the history of the Colony might n ivbe said to have commenced, and he trusted that it would, also be a new era for St. Patirick's Church, but he f...

HOPE FOR THE COLONIES. [Newspaper Article] — Sydney Chronicle — 5 August 1846

HOPE FOR THE COLONIES. (From the Atlar, March 7.) The first parliamentary discussion on colonial subjects since Mr. Gladstone received the seals of the Colonial Department took Ilace on Tuesday eveninT in the House of Lords; and though the jlace.of discussion did ndot ad-miitor Ue rig on. Secretary himself taking any part therein, the de bate indicated how great a gain is Mr. Gladstone's accession to the high office. It showed that thought fulness had superseded fractiousness; that a deep sense of moral responsilility bad replaced a super cilious dogmatism; and that the most serious deli heration had been substituted for overweening self. confidence. The subject discussed was the combination of misfortunes which Lord Stanley's late convict re gulations (whereby a large part of the moral refuse and filth of this country is yearly poured into Van Diemen's Land) had brought on that Colony. The facts-that those regulations were depopulating the island, depreciatiqg the value of its prop...

THE FIFTH ESTATE OF THE REALM.—AGITATION. [Newspaper Article] — Sydney Chronicle — 5 August 1846

THE FIFTH ESTATE OF THE REALM. AGITATION. (Frbmls the Thblet.) In hiis new tarit of duties, Sir Robert Peel aims apparently at reducing the price of commodities, and. extending the national commerce. But he seems likely to succeed also-whether hee iqtends it or net-at increasing the value of combinations against thie law, and extending in all directions the trade and employment of the Agitator. The name of Sir 'ltbert'Peel will unquestionably go down to future generations in connexion with' many measures oif considerable importancee. He has, considerably reduced, if he has not entirely annihilated, the old taritfof privileges and disqua., lifications on the score of religion. He has endowed Mayzooth.' He is atout establishing Free Trade in the utmost latitude of its application, But above and beyond all these things, yet in connexion with each and every of themn, he has done something far more important, regard being had to the principle upon which lie has carried them. He has adopt...
