LAUNCESTON, V.D. LAND, SATURDAY, MAY, 1835. [Newspaper Article] — The Cornwall Chronicle — 2 May 1835

LAUNGESTON, V.D. Land, Siturbxy, May%, 1835. We ere not advocates fort-heap Govern ment, unless equal good can be produced as from expensiveGovernme'nt — but when we know that tbe belt administration U not from necessity the consequence of an «i(ravagant expenditure, and that exam* plea may be found worthy of imitation, in which is composed both wholesome and e:cnom'c conlroul, then we ere disposed to enquire ivrieth.r or not, in this Colony, , we ought to he governed at a less cost , than is now the case. No man in his sen «ci will disrate (lie possibility of it, and none surety wiil be inconsistent enough to *ny, that the saving of the public money ?is undeserving of attention. At the pre sent period; when we are denied that free| institution that is our birth-right, legisla tion by a free and unfettered representation, -economy in public matters cannot be ex pected. Our Legislators are composed of dependents on the favor of the British nobles, and for no oilier purpose than their...

To the Editor. [Newspaper Article] — The Cornwall Chronicle — 2 May 1835

To the Editor Sir._As I have frequent business at the Office of the Clerk of the Peace, and as I have most frequently to go two or three times (I mean during office hours, from 10 to 2) before I find any one at the office. I address myself to you, to beg you will take the earliest notice of it in the Chronicle, as I (and many others, I have no doubt) find it very inconvenient to attend so many times. I do not mean to censure the Clerk of the Peace, for the blame rests with Government, in not appointing a clerk in the Clerk of the Peace Office, which certainly is much wanted for the public conve nience.- I have the honor to be your obedient servant. To the Editor. Sir,— On my promising to stay proceedings against the parties who had made such an illegal seizure upon my property for fines levied against me at the Police office here, for selling wine upon       the authority of a licence I had received from the Government, it was agreed that I should have   the privilege of appealing to the Quarter Sessions against the convictions, for which purpose, I had, on the day of the convictions, filed my notice of appeal at the Police Office; and also subsequently procured from one of the Magistrates, the following certificate of Mr. Cottrell, the informer ; but when     I made my appearance before the Sessions this day, to my utter surprise and the surprise of every one present, Mr. Cottrell opposed my appeal, on the grounds that I ought to have given the Clerk of the Peace notice as well as the convicting Justices ; thus in the face of his own certificate tak...
