FIRED OUT OF THE "FOORCE." Jingoism Run Mad! Star Chamber Business! Wanted—More Light! [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 27 January 1900

FIRED OUT OF THE *? FOOReE.' Jingoism Kan Mad ! Star etaamber Business ! Wanted— More Light ! Whethkr Constable Grainger, of% the Newcastle ' Foorce,' was, or is, a pro-Britisher or pro-Boer doesn't concern The People just now. But what does concern us, and what concerns every honest man, is the summary and utterly ridiculous manner in which Grainger has been accused, placed on trial, found guilty, and penalised. The People wants more light on the matter. If this article aids hi that direction, its purpose will have been partially effected, at any rate. Few people are acquainted with the facts of the case. Briefly, they may be stated as follows : A charge was laid against Constable Grainger that, on Saturday, December 16, he used certain words not at all complimentary to the people responsible for the capitalists war in the Transvaal, and that the words were used in the tram which left' Newcastle for WaUsend at 2 o'clock on that date. We are not certain that Grainger really knew who...

A Correction. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 3 February 1900

A Correction. In ' Jottings ' last week re ference was ma le to the dredofe workers and the Patriotic Fund, and it wa« questioned whether they had ever contributed to the va-ious strike funds. I have since ascer tained that the dredge em p'oyees contributed solidly and substantially to the coal strike of 1888, the maritime strike, the Broken bill strike, and nearly every other strike that has taken place within la'er years. Under these circumstances, an apology is due to the dredge- workers for the mistatement of last wee t — and it is hereby tendered. OlC8.

Newcastle. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 3 February 1900

Newcastle. A good meeting was held at Platts burg on Saturday evening last, when H. E. Holland delivered his lecture on ' Men who Vote, Peter Bowling presiding. The diagrams proved invaluable, and created much interest among the audience. One or two in dividuals in the crowd became noisy — especially when the war policy of the British capitalist was attacked. A fourth regiment bugler — a man who as a soldier gets a boy's pay— was slightly under the influence ; but the audience wouldn't stand him. Then a grey-bearded old gentleman became furiously tiyhtable, but he too found that he was on the wrong side and re tired. In Wallsend and Plattsburg there is great scope for Socialist pro paganda, especially among theyounger people. This evening, every member should attend at Broadmcadow. .The business to be dealt with is of very great im portance.

"OUR SOLDIERS." [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 3 February 1900

' OUR SOLDIERS.' 'Last week we protested against the indecencies perpetrated in connection with thc^ send- off o{ ' our soldiers ' from Sydney. Melbourne ' Tocsin ' has this to say concerning the Vic. ' farewell At the Exhibition the men were made drunk, They showed every sign of it in the building it self, when they got to gether and made public idiots of themselves by in dulging in a semi-savage tipsy dgnce, more like a corrobboree of rummad dened aborigines than the orthodox behaviour of disci plined men. But all this tomfoolery was quite to the taste of the crowd, and the melancholy performance, instead of provoking laugh ter, excited the onlookers to frantic applause. Then the drunken mob was turned loose into the city. At first there was a pem blance of order, but the lines were quickly broken. the bands became disorgan ised, and the progress of the intoxicated military from the Exhibition to the railway station was simply the rush of a riotous rabble, in which the drunkenness...

OPEN COLUMN Falcon's Fallacies. TO THE EPITOB. Sir, — My sausage wrap per a few days since was a portion at the Newcastle ' Herald and contained some commen's by Falcon that were very Fallacious. He had been saying some foreign Princes had been very-unfortunate, they were nearly all assassinated, in timated that some had been murdered by demented ra cialists. Poor fellow, one would think he knew better, but evidently he don't know thediflerence between a So cialist and an A narchist. number of years have rolled away since I joined the S. D.F. in London. I have studied and taught Social ism in England, America and Australia have watched the progress of Socialism and growth of the armv ot Socialists, and 1 dety Fal con to ' ame one Socialist who had committed a murder.
