Pastoral Snow Grounds. — At the recent meeting of the lately-formed Pastoral, Agricul tural, and Horticultural Association, when it was decided to hold their first exhibition 011 tho 22nd August noxt, some discussion ensued as to the most convenient site for holding it, which was finally decided by the racecourse paddock boing solected. As regards space for exhibits of Btock, a more convenient placo could not have been fixed upon ; but unfortunately tho ? ground is rather far from town, and wo aro B afraid that the distance will cause a sensible B decrease in tho attendance of those, principally 1 women and children, who have not the privilego of ranking among the 'carriage folk.' An idea has presented itself to us which we think might reasonably be adopted by 'tlio Committoo — not for the forthcoming show, want of timo precluding the necessary arrangements being i made, but prior to the' exhibition of 1877. COURT OF QUARTER SESSIONS. [Newspaper Article] — The Grenfell Record and Lachlan District Advertiser — 3 June 1876

COURT OF QUARTER SESSIONS.. In complianco with a requisition R. M. Vaughn, Esq., J.P., convened a meeting to be held at; Rich's Thistle Hotel 011 Monday evening last, in order that some Etcps should bo taken to impress upon the Government tho necessity for the establishment of a Court of Quarter Sessions in Grenfell, and to allow an expression of opinion with regard to the untruthful nature of Mr. Superintendent Lydiard's official report upon the subject. At the hour appointed there was a tolerably fair attendance, which would doubtless have been larger but for the counter attraction of an entertainment in the Temper ance Hall. 'Mr. Vaughn, in opening the business, said that by a requisition to him the meeting had been called, in consequence of . the refusal of the Government to grant the prayer of the petition for the establishment of a., Court of Quarter Sessions here. Considerable interest had- been ' manifested in the subject on a previous occa sion, and he thought the district ...

Important to Auctioneers. — The Attorney General has, upon the application of the Braid wood Bench of Magistrates, given an important deoision regarding the salo of wines and spirits by auctioneers. It appears that some short time back, Mr. R. Craig, a Braidwood auctioneer, at a sale of furniture and household effects, knocked down four bottles of ale to a purchaser, at the rate of Is a bottle. An in rortnalion was laia against. mm tor a Dreacn of the Publican's Act, and tho police took action in the matter ; but the Bench, feeling satisfied that tho breach had been committed, did not believe that the amount of the fine, as fixed by the Act, could be mitigated, and they agreed to be guided by the opinion of the Attorney-General, to whom the case was referred. The following was Mr. Dalley's opinion: — 'There is nothing in the Auc tioneers' Act (11 Vic. No. 16) which specially authorises the selling of liquors under an Auctioneer's License ; but upon referring to the ' Sale of Liquors...

CHURCH OF ENGLAND TEMPERANCE ASSOCIATION. [Newspaper Article] — The Grenfell Record and Lachlan District Advertiser — 17 June 1876

CHURCH OF ENGLAND TEMPERANCE ASSOCIATION. The usual monthly meeting in connection with this Association was huld in Holy Trinity Church, on Monday ovoning, 12th instant, and was exceedingly well attended. Tho President (Rev. F. S. Wilson) occupied the chair. As usual, the meeting was opened with prayer and praise, and followed, in accord ance with general custom, by reading and expounding a portion of the Scriptures. The toxfc. nr rnfltpr frvfs. chosen on this occasion were taken from the Old and New Testaments, tho first being from Habbakuk ii. , 15, ' Woe unto him that giveth his neighbour drink, that putteth thy bottle to him, and maketh him drunken also and the latter from Matt. xxii. , 39,' ' Thou slialt love thy neighbour as thyself.' The rev. Chairman, in the course of his remarks, stated that these texts, although chosen from different Testaments, were another proof of the harmony that existed between tho two portions of this great work ; although a very lengthy period had e...

Correspondence. GRENFELL PASTORAL, AGRICULTURAL, AND HORTICULTURAL ASSOCIATION. To the Editor of the G-rcnfcll Record. Sir, — Oblige mo by inserting in next issue the following brief suggestions in reference to the forthcoming Grenfell Pastoral, Agricultural, and Horticultural Exhibition : — In glancing over the schedule of prizes, it seems to me that tho Committee have inadver tently passed over ono very important element of success, viz. — the introduction of exhibits connected with tho fine arts and fancy work. This undoubtedly proves the most attractive featuro in all the Sydney Exhibitions -r and, while it is quite true that tho primary object of an Agricultural Society is to bring into promi nent notice the finest produco of farm and station, the mental culture of thoso about us should not bo overlookccd, especially when the presence of art exhibits also tend so largoly to the monetary success of a show.
