A. good yarding of all classes of pigs forward to a ' smaller attendance of buyers than were present at our sale on the 23rd ult., consequently prices showed a decided drop of fully 15a to 20s per head in bacon pigs, We regret that full advantage was not taken by farmers and others to avail themselves of the good prices ruling at the close of the year. DETECTION OF CRIMINALS. A FINGER PRINT STORY. Speaking before the Justices' Asso ciation in Sydney on Thursday • night, Inspector Childa related a remarkable story respecting finger prints. " A man intending'to break into a house," he Bftid, " climbed over the gate, and, stand ing with his toes on a steel bar inside, Blipped and felk He was wearing a ring on .the left little finger. The gate was protected by sharp iron spikes and in clutching at the top to break, his fall one of-the spikes got under the ring. He was unable to release bis finger, and the weight of his body tore his finger off, leayipg it with the ring impaled on the spike. He then got back over the gate, and decamped. . A. police constable, in going his rounds to try the locks, was startled to Bee the finger and the ring on the gate. He took them away, and at Sootland Yard, where a print of the finger was taken, a search through the records established the identity of the man, who was shortly afterwards arrested. He ...

From July 1,1913, to January 1.1914, 10,252^ tons of butter, valued at £1 127,748, was exported from Vie toria to th» United Kingdom, South Africa, and Eastern and other portn. The exports for Decomber, 1913, totalled 3746} tons as against 2608J tons exported in December, 1912.

SPORTING. At the Ballarat Miners' Turf Club meeting on December 30, C. Costello (owner), J. H. Larkins (rider), and the mare Lily Moor were disqualified for 12 months by the stewards. On Friday the Y.B.C. .committee • heard an appeal against the disqualification, and decided to uphold the appeal. At the Buninyong Turf Club meeting on December 30 J. H. Larkins was fined £6 for breaking his agreement to ride C. Costello's So Near in the Trial Handicap. Larkins appealed to the V.R.C. commit tee, who have referred the matter back to the local stewards for further informa tion. Aspendale Park has long enjoyed the reputation of being a lucky course for backers?, but faith in that respect has been rudely shaken by the results at recent meetings. Every favourite was beaten at the meeting held there on December 13, and on Saturday backers had another bad day, as the only favourite to score was Yeneda. When G.R.D. won the Steeplechase at Aspendale Park last month he cleared out from the field...
