V.R.C. AUTUMN MEETING. [Newspaper Article] — Bairnsdale Advertiser and Tambo and Omeo Chronicle — 4 March 1882

V.R.C. AUTUMN MEETING. fBy NARncIss. The Victoria Rlacing Club's aulumn meeting commences to.day, and promises to provide good sport. The two prin cipal handicaps must be regarded as very open events judging from tile bet ting, there scarcely being a pronounced favorito for either, but as I contemplate dealing more fully with these next week, it will only be necessary now to take a run through tlhe programme for tile first day. Without making a long discourse on this text, 1 will at once say that my inclination lends me to regard IHandy Andy, Young Alfred, and DIhurringhilo for the Hurdles, Progress and Welling ton for tihe Port Philip Stakes, and Na rigator for thie Ascot Vale but Fryingpan will be handy at the finish. Is there anything but Darebin in thle Leger? I think so. Tihe event may be regarded as a certainty for him, but Eoynl Maid and Commotion will make him stretch himself, and 1 thinmk it probable that tihe lilly will win. I had almost forgotten thie Brunswick Stakes, bu...

The Advertiser. PUBLISHED EVERIY TUESDY, TIIUSDAY AND SATURDAY MOiLsING. Bairasdale, Saturday, March 4, 1882. THE Gippsland Hopgrowers' Associn tion meet to-day, to consider what steps shall be taken to place their industry in a fair light before the Tariff Commission and the 0cointry. In doing so, tlhey are,not acting on thle offensive, or desiring to extract new privileges from a reluctant Legislature. On tile contrary, theywerie quite content so long as tiley were let alone, to mind their own business, and go on under tilhe old conditions, working their way to com petency by dint of a fair duty and tile honest sweat of their brow. Thle state ments of MIr. SPORTING NOTES. [Newspaper Article] — Bairnsdale Advertiser and Tambo and Omeo Chronicle — 4 March 1882

SPOITING NOTES. (BY ARCnHMEDES.) Tile Sale Turf Club are really to be congratulated on the splendid entries they have received for the handicap events at their annual races. Every thing appears to warrant tile supposition that tile iiieeting iwill'bo a big success, and that it mayi prove so is my hceaty wishl. I cannothelp, however, thinking thlat there will .bo a great falling-off in the number of acceptances, for when owners come to read.the advertisement carefully to see what amount they have to forward whenl paying, up they will find it rather st;ff to pay 10 per cent. sweepstake. - In making this provision I think the club hlave acted unwisely, for it is handicapping " small men" out of the races, as few, no matter how rosy their chances might appear, could afford to pay besides tihe nomination money 10 per cent. sweepstakes. However, that cannot now be undone, but I think in future the committee, when framing their programme, should make their races less conservative, and thro...

ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE. THE BUMBERRAH ELECTION. TO THE EDITOR OF THE ADVERTISER. [Newspaper Article] — Bairnsdale Advertiser and Tambo and Omeo Chronicle — 4 March 1882

O?IGINAL COIR t1E'SPOAI) ENC\E. -ITIHE BUMBERRAH ELECTION. TO TU ED:ITOR O0 THE ADVERTI5ER. Sir,--A letter nppeared in your issue of the 253rd lt., signed "Scrutator," in wbich a few strong remarks are made regarding me; which I consider were not oulyp rejudicial to my late candidature but calculated to prove hurtful to my private character. I therefore beg a small space in your valunble paper to lay the simple fact of the matter before your renders. "Scrutator," after in dulging in a lot of bombastic twaddle about the different candidates, goes on to say, in speaking of me, "and further, he has already alienated one of his chief supporters, who has done much for him, by proposing to anothler gentleman what the supporter in question considers a mens and uncallcd for anetiou, which would be much to the injury of the said supporter. Any Iperson who could so deliberately act towards another inidividual is not likely to be miore scrupulous towards the ratepayers." Now, sir, the real fac...

MINING NOTES. [Newspaper Article] — Bairnsdale Advertiser and Tambo and Omeo Chronicle — 4 March 1882

MINING NOTES. We learn from Deptford that the parties engaged in driving the Solway Firth tunnel have come across a very promising leader one foot wide, and showing very fair gold. In our supplement will be found the prospectus of the Vagabond Mining Company, Sandy's Creek. Mr. C. Mackintosh is ths Sale agent, and the excellent prospects of the mine are fully vouched for in the letter of our Sandy's Creek correspondent.     The miningr manager of the Nor- manby Q.M. Co., Dargo, reports for the week :-The contractors for main tunnel finished their contract on Monday.   Since then, they have been off pending arrangements for further driving the tunnel. I have started a winze on the skidway reef; although the last stone raised from here was poor, the reef still continues pretty strong, carrying a little gold, and I intend following it down about 30ft. in the hope that it may im prove. Everything is now ready for crushing the parcel of quartz at th...

OUR SANDY'S CREEK LETTER. Tuesday, Feb. 28. [Newspaper Article] — Bairnsdale Advertiser and Tambo and Omeo Chronicle — 4 March 1882

OUR SANDY'S CREEK LETTER. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Tuesday, Feb. 28. An inverted bucket is but an indifferent writing desk, and the mechanical operation of writing is not the pleasantest employment when one's left eye is swollen and closed from the attack of an insidious, good-for- nothing small fly, while now and again the right one drops a sympathetic tear for its fellow in distress. This is precisely how I am placed at the present time. I am on a prospecting tour, and encamped on one of the bead branches of the Merijig Creek. This accounts for my make-shift writing desk, but, as for the aggravated assault on my left optic, I can't account for that, as I never intentionally hurt even a fly in my life. On the contrary, I am rather fond of them, especially the lively blowfly, who will knock life into almost everything, from a joint of beef to a billy of coffee. He will follow you down a shaft, or into a tunnel, and playfully put your candle out about every five minutes. If he h...
