ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE (To the Editor of the Wagga Wagga Express.) [Newspaper Article] — Wagga Wagga Express and Murrumbidgee District Advertiser — 15 January 1859

ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE'. o (To the Editor of the 'Tagga Wagqja ?'press.) Stu---Your issue of the let instant contains a letter, "in haste," by "Vox Popiuli,"in tended as a reply to " Billy parlow's" stric tures on a former epistle by thlt writer; which is certainly the most extraordinary rij mirole'? of irrelvant jargon that ever appeared in print as an answer' to a plain charge. : In the name of that common.sense of which V. P. so boast fully arrogates the possession, what does he mean by "aping philosophy," "profound sen timent," and "exuberance in assured saga city ?" Why, "Billy Barlow". made no pre tensions to such wonderful endowments, but expressed, in very clear and pclain terms, lis? opinion'. of the style and spirit. of a letter which appeared to him a. grattitous iiinslt 'to the community, and which he said then, and emnhaticallv repeats now, could onlrt be the production of as vain, arrogant, and ignorant a coxcombry as ever soiled a sheet of paper. SYDNEY. Tuesday, January 4. [Newspaper Article] — Wagga Wagga Express and Murrumbidgee District Advertiser — 15 January 1859

SYDNEY. -s [PROM' oR OWN? CORESPONDENT.] Tuesday, January 4. The last week has been devoted to holiday amusements. We have had regattas, races, picnics, a balloon ascent, pantomimes, and wizardism. Success has attended all these various pastimes. For the season of the year. the weather has been unusually cool and agreeable, and there has been more out-door bustle and activity in Sydney this Christmas than I remem ber to have seen for years past. All the excitement has been gone through without the occurrence of any serious accident, and the actual disorder and drunkenness has been so little as to invite especial commendation: To-day preparation is making for a renewal of business pursuits. The Assembly renews its sittings this afternoon, when Mr. Martin will move that the resolution adopted, by .the House on the ..15th of. December, which reduced the grant for clerical purposes from £14,000 to one shilling, be rescinded., It is expected.that a lengthy dliscussion will ensue, upon th...

A GLANCE AT EUROPE. [Newspaper Article] — Wagga Wagga Express and Murrumbidgee District Advertiser — 15 January 1859

A GLANCE AT EUROPE. Tnii festive-;thinders of Cherbourgh are 'sfill honirnig 'in' our, ears, like the far-off roll of the dying tempest; and our imaginations haive 0ot yet recovered from the. dazzling bewilderment into which they were thrown by the Press's panoramid pictures of those wa''ike p cantries, which celebrated the completion of this western outpost o' continental despotism. Amid that seine of naval and military pomp, the fair figure of the Majesty of Britain seems to us to have been sadly mir placed. Despite the doud-cleavia" salutes from frigate and fort, and the deafening cheers and vivas which gret hier presence, the form of Eng land's Queen appears less than of a frieindly sovereign, sympathising with the sentiments here vented and rever berated, than the Gentle Genius of peaceful . progress bidding adieu to those dynastic shams, regal and impe rial, which have so long mocked the hopes and insulted the understandings of enlightened Europe. This impres sion is strengthe...

Sometime since it was proposed to complete a telegraph line fiom this place to the maiu line at Albury, but like most events proposcd for the benefit of the township, it appears to have fallen to 'thl ground. Our neighbours in Deniliquin, although a much smaller township, have set us an example, and are now reaping the benefits of their perseverance. ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE ----0-- (1'o the Editor of the Wagga VaWgga Exrpess.) Su---I should feel obliged by your insor tion of the following remarks:-- As a recent resident of Wagga Wagga, I am greatly surprised to find there are no amusements afforded to the. residents .of. the same, inasmuch as there is not the slightest place of amusement for the neighbours or the very many who daily arrive here with the command of means to procure any amusement. No, he is driven to the sole resource---the brutalising ef.ects of drink. I should wish to see here, as elsewhere, in every district of Victoria, some place. of amusement where the working man, his day's toil o'er---perhaps his many month's---may relax his hardships under the genial influence of song, or the more. masculine sports of his native soil. 'That such cannot'be admissable I have yet to learn, as the disseverment of Victoria from New South'Wales cannot disallow to us the same privilege as accorded to them by their authorities. H...
