GREY HAIR Good -news for grey -haired folk is provided in the announcement that, at last, after all these years of re search, a permanent remedy for grey hair has been discovered. It is a re m&rkable fluid called Surmanol, that | has the power of bringing the grey est, whitest hair back to precisely the natural original color, In the amazingly short time of a few weeks. It is not a dye or stain or hair -tint, or sulphur restorer, but apow.; erful tonic for, the color glands of the hair. 'Grey hair is caused by these glands becoming weak through (age, worry, shock, ill health, scalp 'disease, etc. Surmanol builds them up again and it matters not how grey one's hair or how long it has been grey, it' can. be permanently re medied by Surmanol. Victorian Railways—A Bad Year [Newspaper Article] — South Coast Times and Wollongong Argus — 15 January 1915

Yictorian Railways— A Bad Year 'The Leader' says.— Our railways are losing money at the rate of two thousand pounds a day ! That may seem a sensational and extravagant' statement, but it is abundantly! prov ed by the published figures of the Rjailway Department. The decline ia receipts for the half-year ended on 31st December may have only am. ounted to £103,480, but traffic late ly has become so attenuated that railway authorities, instead of esti mating the probable deficit for the year at five hundred thousand; pounds — ^ the figures adopted, by Sir. Alexan der Peacock in his Budget statement — are inclined to raise the loss to six hundred thousand pounds. Judg ing by the most recent returns even the latter is an optimistic anticipa tion. For the last ten days of 1911, 4.he revenue amounted to £15C5,,4S2. or £22,417 less than for the corres - ponding period of Inst year. Seeing that in the last couple of years rails Vray receipts and expenditure hav;:-, Just balanced (last year's...

Luxury and War. BERLIN'S NEMESIS. [Newspaper Article] — South Coast Times and Wollongong Argus — 15 January 1915

Luxury and War. | BERLIN'S NEMESIS. '! Every great war (writes Dr. Hans fluidricksen, the distinguished Swed ish-American psychologist) has been, preceded by a period of profligacy, of brilliant and wickedly extravag ant entertainment, of devotion to .voluptuous dancing and shameless .and reckless luxury Living in the imast of it, the average man has little power to realise this .world wide luxury by comparing it with the simplicity of other days. Ths sociologist can render a service to civilisation by impressing on the nations the enormity of this extra vagence. It has prevailed n0 less in i America than in Europe. The expen- I diture on public amusements in the j t civilised countries has alone reach- J ?ed' an amount that is staggering ; j but they are perhaps less significant than the crazey for more^emoralisiiij* and unwholesome indulgences. Of special significance is the danc ing mania, which has affected the whole civilised world in recent years Dancing is a recreation which,...

Sawdust in the Garden. [Newspaper Article] — South Coast Times and Wollongong Argus — 15 January 1915

Sawdust in the Garden. Sawdust is sometimes used as bed ding for horses; and finds its way into the garden in the form of tba stable manure. From a manurial point of view, however, sawdust far from, satisfactory, because wood decays much more slowly thaU tfce straw, and the material encourag js the growth of fungoid pes^s in the ground- It is, in- fact, objectionable for gardening purposes, and if there are shavings in it they -should be carefully- removed. Sawdust sprea i around the- foot of the .manure hean acts as a valuable absorbent ; it soaks up the rich liquid which fiow? from the manure, and if the materi ? al is then collected in a small bag, and suspended In -water the result will be a liquid fertiliser. The saw dust may be dined in the air and used a second time, but its power of ' soakmg up liquid is greatly les sened. Sawdust may be soaked m paraffm or insecticide and placed a round the roots of carrots, onions, etc., to keep off .pests'
