Canberra- Some Reflections Lecturer in Commercial Law, University of Sydney. [Newspaper Article] — The Federal Capital Pioneer Magazine — 24 February 1927

Canberra - Some Reflections BY W. J. BRADLEY, B A., LLB. Lecturer in Commercial Law, University of Sydney. [Our readers have, from the able pen of MV. W. J. Bradley, barrister-at-law, a fine word picture, from a visitor's point of view, of our Federal City in the making. Those who know the Territory will acknowledge that Mr. Brad- ley was a keen observer during his brief stay, and has given a description that should act as a stimulant to those who intend, in the near future, to visit Canberra.-Ed.] I don't think we Australians can yet see our national capital in true perspective. What I mean is that mögt of us go to Canberra from one or other of the capital cities of the Commonwealth and are used to, not only our owu city, but also to what we term "the bush." From any one of the State capitals the journey to Canberra is through "the bush." At Canberra itself, picturesque as may be Nature's setting for the nation's city, it is still largely in its natural state. The vast undulating p...

Solar Research upon Mt. Stromlo [Newspaper Article] — The Federal Capital Pioneer Magazine — 24 February 1927

Solar Research upon Mt. Stromlo BY. DR. W. G. DUFFIELD. The observatory upon Mt. Stromlo is called a solar observatory, but the term is perhaps too narrow, because the work destined to be carried out upon Mt. Stromlo embraces, not only the study of the sun, but also the physics of the other stars, their sizes, ages, tempera- tures, atmospheric conditions and so on, to- gether with such laboratory researches as are necessary for this purpose. It also undertakes the study of the influ- ence of the sun upon terrestrial affairs, for example, the electrical condition of the at- mosphere, and the fluctuations of the amount of radiation transmitted through the air to the earth's surface. This is an important branch of the work of the Observatory, as there is some hope that, in the course of time, results of direct benefit to the people of Aus- tralia may be obtained. It is not always realised that the sun is a star, and so much nearer than all others, that we have a unique chance of learni...

NEW PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH HALL. [Newspaper Article] — The Federal Capital Pioneer Magazine — 24 February 1927

NEW PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH HALL. With impressive ceremonial, and in the presence of a large number of residents and visitors from adjoining towns, the recently completed Presbyterian Church Hall at Ains- lie was formally opened on Thursday, Feb- ruary 17, by the Moderator-General of the Presbyterian Church of Australia, Right Rev. Dr. Scott West. Representatives of the Presbyterian Church in Victoria and New South Wales were present at the ceremony which commenced with the formal presen- tation outside the hall of a golden key to the Moderator-General by Mr. H. M. Rolland, who welcomed Dr. West on behalf of the local Presbyterians. Dr. West then formally opened the new hall, expressing his gratification at being af- forded the opportunity of performing the ceremony. "I pray," he added, "that the blessing of the Almighty Father may rest on the people who from time to time may find this house of God to be the house of rest." The congregation then entered the hall, where the dedication se...

THE FLYING PIEMAN. [Newspaper Article] — The Federal Capital Pioneer Magazine — 21 March 1927

THE FLYING PIEMAN. Amongst Sydney's earliest identities was William Francis King, better known as "The Flying Pieman." With his hat, and the lapels of his coat, bedecked with coloured ribbons, he undertook many walking com- petitions which seem almost unbelievable, but they were checked in many instances by those whose money he won. In two instances, those who laid wagers against him and drove in a gig behind him, thus placing all doubt as to his marvellous speed on foot at rest. The following are some of his achieve- ments: Walking 1,634 miles in five weeks and four days. Walking from Sydney to Campbelltown and back (62 miles) in 12J hours. Walking from the Obelisk, in Macquarie Place, Sydney, to the 16 mile stone Parra- matta and back in 6 hours, and beating the coach bv 7 minutes. Walking from church at Parramatta to church at Windsor, 43£ miles, for three con- secutive days.
