SALT FOR PIGS. [Newspaper Article] — The Lilydale Express — 17 July 1914

SALT FOR PIGS. The old idea., writes Professor Prim rose M'Oonnell. in the Dairy, was .hat to give .sale to pigs was a very great mistake, and that it aotually sosoned thc-m by causing inflamma.ion of the stomach, followed by death. There is no doubt that :his sometimes did actually happen, but we have got to know a liitle more about matters nouwadays, and cases of so-called salt poisoning were simply those in which coo much sal', or saline bodies had been given. - It is the custohi, for instance, to give pigs all the house hold swill, and -on a -large scale - iF get the refuse from hotels and various other institutions for pig: feeding. All. .his stuff has doubtless already had salt added, and if a ,ittle more salt is put in, it can be seen that this swill, which is thus twice stilted, be comes poisonous, and might - therefore be set down" by some people io be due to the small quantify of salt last added. But in ,the ordinary case, no such contingency- arises, and such foods as mai...

PRACTICAL COW VALUES. [Newspaper Article] — The Lilydale Express — 17 July 1914

PRACTICAL COW VALUES. "Nothing is clearer than that the' successful breeder of the future will be a book-keeper and a statistician." This s'atement was made 'some time ago by E. Davenport, Dean of the Il linois College of Agriculture. Of course he did not mean the breeder may carry on his work by noting simp ly the records of his cows, but rather the successful breeder will keep records of his cows and use them in direct ing his breeding operations. There, is -'the well. recognised dairy form, a form .that is adapted to dairy work. While a person may determine from the con formation ,whith.r the animal is' of dairy or beef.. rreedig, yet ,here is no one who can determine from ap pearance how much work a cow can do by looking at her. Intelligent people givt expression by their manners, speech and behaviour of -a certain amount of their attain ments. But the worth of a per. son must be measured by what he can do, and not by appearance. rHe must work, and; his work must'be measured. So...

The President. said he would rule Y, the protest out of order. It was an insult to him as president of the Ass- ' ociation. It appeared in the minutes ' that the Healesville delegates asked his ruling on the position of March bank, and he ruled that hlie was eli gible to play, quoting rule 23. There was no exception taken at that meet ing by any delegate.
