Co-operative [?] [Newspaper Article] — The Singleton Argus and Upper Hunter General Advocate — 19 August 1874

Co-operative [?] FOR the last two or three years, among a Certain section of the community at bone, there has been a great outcry raised against the the enormous spread and development of operative .societies. _ The complaints, aa might well be supposed, Issue from those traders and retail dealers-more particularly affectedby the operations of these stores. The dissatis faction expressed has been chiefly directed, not against tbe societies formed by such of the public as, tor distinction, may be called independent; but against those organized and supported by achus ot pexrnms known under the name, of ovil servant*, and, for this ?reason,' termed civil service co-operative societies. Tbe complaints, made have in some instances gone so far as to include a prayer for the. suppression, or. at any rate, for the Government to restrain their servants from having anything to do with, or, in any way, giving support, to, these societies—a dc zaOad about as outrageously absurd as any ever made...
