WHEAT RIVAL TO AUSTRALIA. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 21 October 1905

WHEAT RIVAL TO AUSTRALIA. ? * ' If Australia is going to hold its own in the wheat markets of the world (writes the London corres pondent of the Adelaide 'Adver- tiser'), it will be necessary to develop a more energetic land settlement policy — not a policy under which furiners in one State are tempted to migrate to another, without enlarging tho pettlcd area of Australia as a whole, but en couraging settlers from abroad whose efforts will increase tlie Commonwealth's production. Tliu United States has practically reach ed the limit of the development of its wheat production, for the pres ent, at all events. I don't think yon need fear competition with Canada, which cannot compare with Australia, provided the latter will adopt a similarly active immi gration policy. India, Russia, liw:; nin'nia and other wlii'iil-jjiiowing countries are not likely to be siiiy more formidable as competitor in the near future tlmn tlioy uro iiow. But 1 fear Argentina. AFTER MANY DAYS. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 21 October 1905

AFTER MANY DAYS. A remarkable change of opinion on the subject of . the. Boors : is re ported at Berlin. Four -or fivo years ago brother Boer was loaded with acclamations as a noble patriot who was fighting for tho liberation of hia 'country from tho sway of tho arrogant Britisher. He was extolled ,to the skies in the daily and weekly Press of Germany. The ' Fliegen de Blatter ' portrayed him with a halo round his head, and 'Klad- deradatsch' represented him as a wearer of a hero's wreath. But today, alas, ' Quantum niultaius ab -Ho Hectore qtiie redit exuvias in dutus Achillei.' Brother Boor when he took up arms against tlie British in South Africa was a high souled individual, whose valor caused verses to flow from the pens of tho minor poets of Berlin as free ly as tears from a crocodile. To day, when he is found plotting to take up arms against German domination in South-west Africa, lie is violently denounced as a rebel and traitor, and prompt ly gaoled. From which it is clear ...

Trafalgar Day. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 21 October 1905

Trafalgar Day. TintouGHOUT the British-speaking world, and particularly in the large centres of population, prepara tions are being made to celebrate the centenary of Trafalgar. Every schoolboy is familiar with the history of the great naval battle which established for England the proud title of ' Mistress of the Seas.' And the name of Nelson will ever remain an imperishable memory throughout the great Empire on which the sun never sets. Satur day (to-day), 21st October is the centenary of England's 'feat victory over the French fleet — a victory which cost our Xavy the life of its greatest commander — Nelson — just as the enemy had struck his colors. En to-day's cele brations in the cities the Tricolour of France and the Union Jack will float side by side in token of the good-will existing between the nations. Since the day of Trafalgar when the ' wooden walls of Old England were manned by sea-dogs who fretted for the command of 'Boarders, Ahoy!' naval warfare has been revolutioni...

MR. DEAKIN AND PROTECTION. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 21 October 1905

-??? '??-MR; DEAKIN'AND ? PROTECTION. Speaking at the annual dinner of the N.S.W. Chamber of Manufac tures on Saturday night Mr. Dca kin said : When the time came, as come it would next year or later, it would be the circumstances of the manufacturing industries of Aus tralia, as well as the rural indus tries, that would be taken into consideration. It would be a tariff drawn up once more with the deliberately-professed purpose of the development of Australian industry of every kind. There would be no hesitation and no ambiguity. When this country was next appealed to it would have that distinct issue above and be fore all others — Australia for the Australians, and by that means Australia for the Empire. It would be theirs, too, to consider whether it was not possible, with out detriment to any industry worth conserving, to make some arrangement to give to the Mother land and to other parts of the British Empire that preference as against the foreigner which Aus tralia hoped to get...

THE 'YELLOW-BACK PERIL.' [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 21 October 1905

THE 'YELLOW-BACK PERIL.1 ' I.\' a brief but painfully remarkable article in the September number of the ' Monthly Review ' (writes the ' Guardian '), Mr. Basil Tozer calls attention to 'The Increasing Popu larity, of the Erotic Novel.' From the literary output of the last three years and a half ho has selected 87 novels, and has analysed their morals. They are all books which have enjoyed considerable vogue, and have all been obtainable at the circulating libraries— to whose con ductors they had not appeared to bo sufficiently improper to merit exclusion from their shelves. Seven teen of these books treat marriage as ' played out,' 11 glorify co respondents, 22 practically advo cate that married men ' shall bo allowed to keep mistresses 'only,' seven hold up to ridicule the woman who is faithful to her husband, and 23 describe the betrayal of young women ' as openly as it can bo described in a book that is not to hov'ostraciscd by tho bookstalls.'
