FATAL ACCIDENT. LOSS OF THREE LIVES AT CORNERS INLET. [Newspaper Article] — Gippsland Times — 27 November 1861

FATAL ACCIDENT.     Loss of Three Lives At Corner Inlet.   It is with much pain that we have to report the death of Mrs. Peterson (wife of   Mr. Charles Peterson, Corner Inlet pilot), her sister and son by drowning.     The particulars are, as far as we can learn, the following:— Mr. Peterson left home on Saturday week last to take charge of the "Elizabeth," outward-bound from Corner   Inlet. He remained away in discharge of his duties until Tuesday, when he returned home to the pilot station at Biddy's camp. Here he found the house deserted and no appearance of any one being at home on that day. He immediately suspected that some   calamity had occurred and wandered about that lonely place, not knowing what to do, by the light of the moon. Some hours after his arrival he discovered thrown up on the sands the body of his wife's sister, thus were his   worst fears conf...

LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. [Newspaper Article] — Gippsland Times — 4 December 1861

LOCAL INTELLIGENCE.   The Melbourne press appear to make so   much capital out of snake stories, that we,   who are daily in the habit of seeing some scores of these reptiles, are very little inte- rested in the hair breadth escapes and extra- ordinary chances which have been manufac- tured by some penny-a-liner into the approach of a catastrophe, equal in its dire effects to an Islington murder or a romance of true love   ended by a plunge into the Seine. However,   that we should not be behind the Victorian press in lending our aid to the dissemination           of fortuitous escapes, we contribute our snake story to the general collection, at the same time, though we repress names, we vouch for the truth. One evening last week, Mrs —, the young and beautiful wife of one our largest pastoral tenants, as was her custom during her husband's absence, had a...
