Ill the summer of 1812 I had occa sion (ho wrote) to bo in Per tit. SPEED OF ANIMALS. [Newspaper Article] — Rainbow Argus — 17 January 1914

SPEED OF ANIMALS. Tt is believed that no animal lias over exceeded the speed which can be attained by the horse. Instantaneous photographs of one famous specimen showed the full length of a complete stride to be about twontv-six feet. Tho hare has not in reality the speed of tho dog. The dog, on the other liand, does not attain tho speed of the horse. The giraffe is said to run at the rate of fifteen yards per second under the most favorable conditions. The ele phant, going at tho rate of two yards a second, carries n weight approximatc ing to that, carried by six horses.

Tho secret lay in the construction of tho bottle, -which was composed of vari ous chambers. lu each of these was placed a certain liquid., tho flow being controlled by valves in the bottle's nock immcdiatoly under the finger of the ma gician. The great weakness of the trick lay in this—that tho magician did not permit the bottlo to go out of his hand to bo examined by the audience: but tho re cent^ discoveries of chemists ena...
