METROPOLITAN MEMORANDA 'bl By "Aut,olycus." ' A snapper.up of unconsidered trifles.' The Heat< The contorence 01 - district councils at Mount Barker in respect to bush arcs was most timely, considering the heat of the -.reather which succeeded it. On days such as Sunday, or Monday, an outbreak would be awful to face. As it was hundreds of fowls were killed by the heat and hu man beings were in a state bordering on collapse, yet people, including wo men, crowded into a small room to hear the evidence In respect to the death of Mr. Plannigan at Unley. They wore almost suffocated themselves, and they helped to stifle others. The summer, hitherto has licea compara tively cool, with alternations of heat and rain, but this week has emphasized Adelaide's claim to a thermometer. Most people found it difficult to work even in the coolest of offices, and those who haft to labour iu the open air must uave felt the heat greatly, 'j he cool drink shops and hotels did a fine trade ou M...

BUTTERFAT AND COMMERCIAL BUTTER. [Newspaper Article] — The Mount Barker Courier and Onkaparinga and Gumeracha Advertiser — 14 January 1927

BUTTERFAT AND COMMERCIAL BUTTER. The question frequently crops up as to the difference between "butter fat" and "commercial butter," and it is somewhat surprising the small num ber of cream suppliers who have some knowledge concerning the meaning of each term and all that It implies, says Mr. W. H; Downes (Dairy Instructor, South-East District). For the bene fit of those less infoftned on the sub ject, the following remarks may prove helpful. ■ "ButterCat" is simply the pure fatly substauces contained in milk with 110 other constituents present and ts es timated by a simple multiplication <>i the weight and butterfat test and di vided by 100. "Commercial lmitel-" as known in Australia, Is th . fatty pro duct of butter factories, containing on the average, 83 per cent, of pure butterfat, 15 per cent of moisture, and 3 per cent, other constituents, chiefly mineral ash (saiy and proteid matter. TOBACCO GROWING. BLUE MOLD CONQUERED. [Newspaper Article] — The Mount Barker Courier and Onkaparinga and Gumeracha Advertiser — 14 January 1927

TOBACCO GROWING. BLUE MOLD CONQUERED. The closing stages of the year bring i conclusive proof of a greht-achieve-1 went in agricultural experiment and i research. Means of controlling or ' preventing the blue mould disease of tobacco have been discovered and dev monstrattd on a commercial - scale.' This should make it possible--to lift tobacco growing from the position of an absolute gamble to that of a stable industry. This is the crowning suc cess of some seven years' experiment and investigation on . the part of Dr. Darnell-Smith, Government Biologist, and C. J. Tregenna, tobacco expert of the Department of Agriculture (The Sydney'Telegraph points out). About four years ago these co-workers came to the conclusion that It would be pos sible to prevent blue mould by con trolling temperatures and moisture in the seed beds. Accordingly for the past four' years their experiments have been directed along those lines. Each season they have had encourag ing results. Method of Treatment, ...

A NAVAL EPIC. [Newspaper Article] — The Mount Barker Courier and Onkaparinga and Gumeracha Advertiser — 14 January 1927

A NAVAL EPIC. The management of Acme Pictures offer patrons .an exceptionally flue program this week. Iu "Zeebrugge" not for one moment will you believe that you are looking at a motion pic ture. Every incident just as you imagined it may have happened. Bri tain's death-dealing Armada, in the most sensational stunt .in history—and the wonderful Mole defences and treacherous canal of Bruges all woven into a human appealing photo-drama of England's fearless warriors of the sea. And yes, there >s pathos too. And human heart interest for, remem ber, this is not a drama of war, al though ' its setting is the greatest uaval exploit of history. It is not a sordid story of slaughter. It is the glorious record of a handful of British officers and sailors who brought the sea power of the enemy to its knees; who undertcok every risk in the spirit of joyous fun, just is if they were playing at cricket. You'll never for get the poignancy of the scene when one of them, under terrific fire from...

THE WORLD TOBACCO POSITION. [Newspaper Article] — The Mount Barker Courier and Onkaparinga and Gumeracha Advertiser — 14 January 1927

THE WORLD TOBACCO POSITION. Available information on tobacco pro duction for 1926 in countries that have reported to date, is less favorable than at this time last year, states the United •States Department of Agriculture in a review issued on 2Sth August. Accord ing to the Department it is still too early to make any statement as to the probable world crop this year, but tigures for the United States, Porto Rico, Belgium, Bulgaria, and Tunis amount to about 10 per cent, less than the 1925 figures for those countries. Demand appears lo be In no danger of declining iu any consuming' country, and United .States bulk leaf prices are substantially higher ihan at this time last year. The report continues:—"Consumption of to bacco in Europe appears to show little or no effect from temporary industrial dis turbances. Since the war. Great Britain, Prance and Germany have all increased their rate of tobacco imports, the larger part of which enters domestic consump tion. Cigarette tobacco typ...

SPORTING. By "Courier." [Newspaper Article] — The Mount Barker Courier and Onkaparinga and Gumeracha Advertiser — 14 January 1927

SPORTING. Following favorites just at present Is a very unprofitable undertaking. At the recent Christmas round j>nly four first fancies out of 29 racefgot to the front, and further disaster was experienced on Saturday. At the same time, however, there- was noth ing In" the way. of a sensational divi dend,jin3 there were a couple of In stances where- backers were very unlucky. This was so in the Hurdle Race, as it was plain that when he fell Nicholander was simply cantering, and his rider was just on the move to send him out to win his race. Sen sation was' in his tracks, and, this pair would probably have provided the dividend^ paying positions. Mount Cooper and Lord Hatan were the only ones left standing. No doubt .we will see'Mount Cooper hav ing another slap at the Great Eastern Steeple this year.'
