ENGLISH NEWS. [Newspaper Article] — The Gundagai Times and Tumut, Adelong and Murrumbidgee District Advertiser — 22 February 1868

ENGLISH. NEW3. The biro announcement of the fact of an at tempt having been made to blow up Clerken: well prison which we have received in our telegraphic summaries Of European news, has been supplimented by the arrival of full details of the manner in which the atrocious crime was perpetrated. The prison stands in a populous neighbourhood in London-, and that side of it where the attempt Was made is bounded by a Btteet named Corporation-lane, which is crowded with .the families of artizans. It'- seems that on the- morning of 'Friday, December 13th, the police authorities had re ceived information that an attempt would be made to rescue the Fenian leaders, Burke and Casey, who were inmates of the Clerkenwell house of detention, and that although this was looked upon as improbable a number of police were held is readiness and detectives were placed in the streets surrounding the prison. Nothing, however, arose to justify suspicion. Shortly after four in tho afternoon a truck passed i...

ENGLISH AND FOREIGN. (JVora tin Borne Neat) K telegram has been, received by the Foroign-onlco which will be Iiaiietl everywhere with pleaiure. It cornel virtually from Zanzibar, u dated September 28, and itates that reliable information Imd reached thai*, place of Dr. 'Livingstone having beon eeven months previously; at Marunga, on hij Toynge towards the north-east, passing to the west of Like Tanganyika. When me aespatcu was aeut oil, Air. Churchill was about to proceed Co the const to obtain further information. If it be true that Dr. Living stone was really at the place mentioned ia Maruli last, it iB quite clear tbat tho Btorr of hU death was a fabrication of tho men who professed to have seen him attacked. A man advertised for a wife, and requested each caudidate to enclose her cartc-de-visite. The refusal of Government to proclaim St. itrick's Day as a holiday is said to have .used considerable indignation in Sydney. A man named. He was formerly mail contractor batween Goulburn \ and Yass. Mr. Fisher's cdebri\ted race-horao, Fishhook, together with Fenella tSjjlfBarnmster, arrived from Melbourne, and wBraSi^iifely. landed in Sydney from the steamship City of Adelaide on Sunday morning \xd, A petition to government is now being numerously sighed in Goulburn, praying that a leling be granted to a coal mino in the lo tity of Bundnuoon Creek, three miles from tl line of railway at Sutton Forest. It sets r 'h the advantages that would result to the to of Goulburn, from being enabled to lighi ..ieir churches, streets, and places of business with gas, and points out the benefit the railway itself would derive from thus securing...

Advertising [Newspaper Article] — The Gundagai Times and Tumut, Adelong and Murrumbidgee District Advertiser — 29 February 1868

From the ' Wagga Wagga Express' we learn that Dr. Outline Carr has been obliged to return to that town to answer for giving a worthless cheque to the Secretary of the Mechanic's Institute. It appears that before leaving the town a fortnight ago he handed the Secretary a cheque upon the Bank of Now South Wales, Sydney, in payment for the rent of tho room. The cheque was immediately passed into the Joint Stock Bank for collection, and soon after this was done, a note wa3 received from Dr. Carr, asking him to hold over tho cheque for a day or two. Even if tho Secretary had been inclined to comply with the request, he could not then have done so, as the cheque had already passed out of his hands, and was in due course presented and dishonoured.
