The Marshal of France.—General Niel_, created Marshal of France, for his brilliant services on the Mlncio, is, according to & writer in one of the Paris papers, not more than fifty-seven years old, and looks muoh younger. Ha was a student of the polyteohnio school, which he quitted to study engineering at _Matz. His early promotion was not extremely rapid. We find him a lieutenant of engineers in 1827; he became a captain in 1S35, and gained _his chef de batidiion_'s epaulet on tbe field of battle of Constantino (1837). He was made a colonel in 1845, and with that rank he took part in the expedition to Home in 1S19 as head of the enginears staff. While at Koine he was promoted to the rank of brigadier-general, nnd shortly afterwards was charged with the mission of currying the keys of the city to tho Pope at _ttaeta. Oa his return to _Fratcs he became a member ot the Superior Committees of Engineering and Fortifications, and was appointed director of the engineering depa...
