Tom Parkeri _^^^^ i _£ » a _« _sz > _^ v _^ : _^ , i » ¦* - _; . * _-- - _»^« i . -. Demonstrations Hinder Cause of Civil Liberties Serious questions are now being asked about the results o £ demonstrations and picketing in the South done By _Northenu . . clergymen and other out-of-state groups . In a recent address the Reverend Dr . Harold Ockenga , pastor of the famed Park Street Church of Boston , assailed the use of pilgrimages to the South of the grounds that such action is often more detrimental to the cause of civil rights than helpful . Such action , Ue said , does very little to bridge the widening gap between North and South . He hit the position of the pickets with the charge that the whole situation is rapidly deteriorating . If we break the law by forcing the situation we are going to encourage the extremist groups . Integration is something that should come about by _psaceful means and not by breaking the law or using force . It appears that things have reac...

EDITORIALS [Newspaper Article] — F&M College Reporter — 17 April 1964

EDITORIALS Why Bitterness ? Last week the REPORTER received a letter to the editor signed A Sophomore . Because of our editorial policy against running letters which are not signed ( although we will withhold a name upon request ) , we will not publish it . In essence , the sophomore s letter is a p lea for a sort of united campus rising against the oppression of the Administration . According to the letter the plight of the students is mainly their fault because they have failed to take any unified action against the wrongs which are so pervasive in the College community . From time to time there are isolated protests which result in token concessions , such as a once-a-year steak dinner . These concessions , however , do not touch the heart of campus problems and serve only to quiet current protests . The writer lists a who e set of grievances which he feels should be remedied immediately by student action . The implication , of course , is that nothing is being done in these area...

Leave Leaves And Polish Diamond ! To the Editors : Complaining about the Franklin and Marshall athletic policy has in recent years become somewhat of a tradition I , like most students , have became relatively tired of the constant mention of the subject and have more or less resigned myself to the fact that the situation will someday be reme died with our usual slow , inconclusive , and circuitous methods . However , there comes a time when a cry must be issued The subject which I wish to mention is the fact that , as of the third week of the baseball season , the varsi ty team still has no field on which to play . The team , showing more promise than any in recent years , has . been forced to re-schedule games at local high schools , and , as yet , has not held a single practice on a regulation field . The weather certainly cannot be blamed , as Millersville had their field in A-l condition all of three weeks ago . What is the answer ? One which I wish to propose occurred to me mo...

Fabled American Wilds Exist into Present Day [Newspaper Article] — F&M College Reporter — 17 April 1964

Fabled American Wilds Exist into Present Day By LUTZ BAUER Do you know what snow-birds are ? I did not know about this interesting species until I came to the south of your country where I saw them lined up along the roads waiting for a ride They are enjoying another advantage of this country . When it gets too cold in the parks and even in the subway stations of the big cities up north , many of them just go south , nearer to the sun , picturesque figures , outcasts of a standardized and conformist society , despised but perhaps not quite as unhappy as they should be . Our Tippelbrueder m Germany , now nearly extinct by welfare legislation , managed to hibernate m another way Late in the fall they usually committed a small delinquency ( theft or fraud ) which helped them to a relatively comfortable state pension behind iron-bars for the winter . He Envies Roamers a Little Subsconsciously it might be that I envy these guys a little bit Even if I sometimes flattered myself that I had...
