THE PALMER EARTH OR WELL AUGER . This new auger for penetrating all kinds of earth-like material such as surfuce soil , clay , hard-pan , quicksand , mud , coal , lifting small bowlders , &amp; c , is especially adapted for boring wells of any size in all kinds of prairie or other lands . It differs so much from all augers heretofore used , and so far excels them that it . may not only be re garded as a very great improvement , but as indeed a nnv earth-auger . It . consists of a semi-cylindrical pod , having attached at its lower end a knife for separating the cut from the wall , and a peculiarly twisted and curved moldboard , forming the bottom of the pod , carefully adapted to cutting and raising the earth into the pod with the least possible resistance , and consequent freedom from clogging . The latter continues about once around with a steep twist . to admit of a rapid progress in boring , and of a wide mouth for receiving stones or other obstacles nearly as hrge as th...

The Machine Shops are amply equipped with steam power , lathes , planers , boring machines , chucks , benches , vises , &amp; c , for turning out patterns for , or making iron machinery of , all kinds . During the vacation these Shops are kept running , doing general job work , such as filling orders for any new machinery or apparatus , or for repairing agricultural implements , and the like .
