The Milking Machine . A stumbling block that has stood in the way of the development of the dairy interests , especially in large milk plants , has been the task of milking the cows . Where one must rely upon ordinary help it is difficult to find those who are efficient and capable of handling the work as it should be handled and are , at the same time ; dependable . The average hired , man does not love to care for or milk cows and he has a very slight appreciation of his responsibility . For this reason milking has come to be , more or less unpopular . The milking , machine , however , has taken . the place of the hired man and as it is being improved it is thoroughly dependable . Mirking machines have been subjects of experiments for years , but only within a comparatively recent time have they proven at all practical . Today there are several makes upon the market , any one of which will be efficient and successful 1 in its operation . The great drawback to the machine as first ...

THE HADE-TO-ORDER CREAM SEPARATOR The dairy farmer who buys a 1910 De Laval Cream Separator gets a machine that is really made especially to order for him . First : Because the 1910 De Laval is designed and constructed , without sacrificing any vital feature , to meet the comments and criticisms gathered from over 1 , 100 , 000 dairy farmers to whom De Laval machines have already been sold . Second : Because if he should offer to pay ten times the ordinary price he couldnt secure a closer skimming , a greater money , time and labor saving , a more durable , a more convenient or an easier * running separator than the 1910 De Laval . Lastly : Because every feature of the 1910 De Laval machine from top to bottom is just as the best mechanical as well as the most practical engineering demands that it should be . The De Laval is the made-to-order cream separator without the made-to-order price . The De Laval catalogue tells the whole story . Ask for a copy . The De Laval Separator Go . 1...

The Jersey Outlook [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 February 1910

The Jersey Outlook To The Berkshire World : I am asked to write about the Jersey outlook and I cant see anything but outlook . For every Jersey cow that is the right kind , there are two wise men who want her and four men would would want her if somebody would just sit down for an hour and tell them about the Jersey cow and the number of people who use milk and butter every day . Draw a line from Chicago to St . Louis and then draw an oval that at the widest place would be two hundred miles across and you take in Chicago , Elgin , Rockford , Aurora , Joliet , Bloomington , Peoria , Quincy , Galesburg , Champaign , Danville , Decatur , Springfield , Alton and St . Louis . Add the population in these cities together and then add the rural population and then stop and figure out how long it will take you and me to raise the good Jerseys to replace the quarter of a million poor cows that Prof . Fraser says are so poor that it takes two hundred nine of them to make the mi wofit in one ye...

Jersey Isle Stock Farm . This great breeding and importing establishment is located on the Interurbaa line just west of Rushville , Indiana . No importer in the past ten years has brought to America more cattle that have gone out in purchasers hands and made good in the show ring than Mr . Walker has done . The Grand Champion bull at the last National Dairy Show and the Grand Champion bull at the AlaskaYukon Exposition , both were imported by Mr . Walker and sold in 1908 sale at very modest prices , one at $ 200 . 00 and the other at $ 160 . 00 . Mr . Walker has now in his barns one of the best lots of high class Jerseys ever brought across the ocean . These cattle will be sold at auction early in the summer . HOG NOTES—By a Practical Hog Man A . J . Lovejoy , Roscoe , III Can t We Help You ? Gray , Okla . The Berkshire World , Springfield , 111 . Gentlemen : —Some months ago , I wrote you about my sows ; that I could not get to breed . In answer you said that you had referred my letter to Mr . A . J . Lovejoy , Roscoe , 111 . Mr . Lovejoy answered the inquiry in one of your issues of The Berkshire World . I followed his advice , In having the sows reduced in flesh , and one of them now has six as good pigs as I ever saw . She farrowed seven but I lost one . We think we have the best bunch of pigs this country ever had and I have Mr . Ball Bearing Throughout Every vital operating feature is Ball Bearing in the New Model L . C . Smith 4 Bros . Typewritcr ( ALL THE WRITING ALWAYS IN SIGHT ) Ordinary friction bearings are cheaper to make , but not cheaper in the end . Ball bearings properly made , as we make them , cannot grind themselves loose like common friction bearings . They work smoothly , noiselessly , accurately , without play or lost motion , indefinitely . They can t wabble . Our ball-bearing carriage solves the problem of free-running combined with absolute rigidity . Our ball-bearing typebar segment permits a capital shift , the easiest known , yet thoroughly positive . Our Gardner ball-tearing typebar joint insures , with least resistance , the accurate imprint of the types , in their proper places , always . The ball bearings of the L . C . Smith & Bros . Typewriter serve exactly the same purpose as the jewels in an expensive watch . A cheap watch , with pinion bearings , may keep good tim...

The Gem of the Wilderness [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 February 1910

The Gem of the Wilderness Roycroft Farm is a gem , set in a wilderness of pine . The master mind at Roycroft has made a beautiful spot where man , in his mad rush for wealth had left destruction behind . God has done much to make Upper Michigan a grand , sublime spot , but man has cut and slashed , burned and logged until it is unsightly . In this country of pine trees and logging camps , deer , bear , and wolves , trout streams and ozone , is found Roycroft Farm , Sidna ^ , Mich . How many hundred acres stagger us , but the Farm proper is some 400 or 500 acres along the line of the Chicago , Milwaukee & St . Paul R . R ., adjoining the Village of Sidnaw . The office is the most handsome and complete farm office in America and is filled with books and works of art . The farm buildings are not expensive , but complete and artistic . Everywhere things are clean . The motto is Where cleaniness is paramount . The hog house is clean , and a clean man in charge . The dairy is ...
