It was In the year 18G1 that Mr. Joho Prout bought the farm of Saw? bndgeworth, Herts. The estate pur? chased contained four hundred and fifty acres of heavy clay land mixed with strong loam. The price paid was ?10000. About thirty shillings per acre was the lull value of the soil when he entered luto possession. He soon set his farm in order by cleaning the land from weeds, draining, subsoiling, ditch? ing, fencing, and cottage-buildiug and performing the necessary improvements preparatory to entering on a novel ?jatem of husbandry.
