COJUIERCIAX. BQXQLVLV, FEB. 23, 16C9. The Fcrat Kiig arrived last week with cargo of lumber to II. Hackfeld A Co. The California bark, CataUru, Worth, xoai ter, arrived oa Sunday- from Francisco, lay off and on, and sailed the tame evening for Japan. She brought no papers or letters. To-day the American dipper ship Bait, Forsyth, master, passed the port "bound for Manila. Capt. F. sent on shore some papers and letters. Advices by the Baz report the sugar mar ket lets firm, and that the bark Cambridge was to sail on the 10th inst. for this port, and may be looked for in U this week. The ship JtaltUr left Eta .Francisco on the 1st inst. for Manila, taking some letters and papers for this port, hut has doubtless passed. The steamer Kilavea was purchased by the Government last week, for the "sum of $6,000. Besides the above-mentioned lines of communication, there is another railway receiving'a subsidy from the Central Gov ernment, which join3 the Valley of the Mississippi to that of the Tied River, in Minnesota. An American steamer is now running' on the Red River as far as Fort Garry, and thus an uninterrupted line of communication by railway and steamer connects all tho English establishments on the Red River to the United States, and keeps them entirely separated from Canada. These are the complaints made by the Colonial to the Home Government, and in favor of which they bring forward some good, as well as some exaggerated, argu ments. If Canada were united to British Columbia by a railroad, then-would the di; tance from Europe to China and Japan be lessened 3,000 mile3 ; the western coast of America, New Zealand.
