A shcrt time ago a negro attempted to board the N", & W. train with a Winchester -rifle. The conductor objected, the negro an? swered impudently and the brakesman j handed the conductor a pistol with which he opened fire on the negro, but missed him. The negro fired on the brakesman, sending a Winchester ball through his shoulder and then fired at the conductor. The firing became quite general, and the negro was shot whale retreating, but not badly hurt. He soon returned with more ammunition, his supply having been cx hausted, but was arrested and jailed. Saturday, last, a still more serious dis? turbance occurred. It seems Webster Snodgr&ss and Morg Tbacker had been at enmity for some weeks. A NARK?W ESCAPE. TT. IC. Marrta Keaci:?? Two Colored Child? ren from the F!a*a?*. Tho residence of Moaes Kane, colored, near tho brickyard waa burned to the ground on Monday afternoon. Moses lost all of his household goods in the fire and but for the timely 'assistance of Mr. W. E. Harris would have lost his two child? ren. It seems that the grown-up mem? ber* of the family had left the house and had locked up the children in one of tho up stairs rooms. Mr. Harris was walking on Poplar Hill when ho observed flames issuing from the house. Hearing the screams of children he rushed to the house and was surprised to find that there were two locked up in the burning build? ing. He tried to get them to leap from the windows telling tbem that he would catch them. Hut the children were far too much scared to do this. Work Commenced on the Norton An?* Hotel~<l KaAh for Lot?. Norton July 23,?Mr. Lamkert, con trhetor of Roanoke, and a large force of carpenters have arrived and will start on the building of several houses immedi? ately. The company propose building ten cottages at this time. The rock is being quarried for the Norton Arms Hotel. There has been a great rush of appli? cants for lots in Norton; so much so that nearly all of the First Plat have been ap? plied for. Mr. J. L. McCormack hss brought out a second plat. It contains lots East of the hotel site. The rush of business has been so great at the depot that the agent, Mr. Shanks, and bis clerks have been overworked, and they propose resigning unless they get more help. It is hoped the difference will be settled and that Mr. Shanks will re? main here. The Mountain View Hotel is found to be too small already. The company have commenced to build a large wing to it. J.
