Wwfelfi JAMESTOWN, DAKOTA. The death of Thurlow Weed, has again brought out a full discussion of Morgan's disappearance, with the gener al verdict that it is as much a mystery as ever. The ordinance introduced in the Ger man Tarliment against the importation of American pork covers all branches of hog product, and will probably become a law. Tho pork and bacon shipments from tho United States to Germany last year were 131,133,309 pounds. The president especially favors an immediate and extensive reduction in taxation, both in tariffs on foreign im ports and homo productions. Congress •will require a good deal of progging from the public, as the session pro gresses, to keep the members up to the reform spirit. Beeclier is not afraid of immigration. In his tha nksgiving sermon re cently 011 the vast immigration he said: "T lie world is ietdingus with popula tion, hut the stomach is ours, and we can digest it so let them come from all places. '^L.:"o& LOCAL AFFAIRS. •,c, _— From Tuesday's Daily. The Literary Last Night. Literary entertainments are nearly al ways good and especially is this true of those given by home talent, arid yet home talent is much like the prophet, "not without honor except in his own country," or in other words, the'better appreciated the farther away from home. Daily as gociation and familiarity with those tak ing part in such exercises detracts very much fiom the impression they make just as personal association and familiari ty with great men takes awny the awe their presence would otherwise inspire. Therefore we think it quite a compliment to home talent to succeed in giving a sat isfactory entertainment at home among their everyday associates, and those who took part in the exercises last night certainly deserve a high mede of praise for the manner in which they captured the audience at the M. E. church literary entertainment last night. The audience was large and contained many exact...

The literary columns of Eastern papers contain elaborate and commendatory re views of Mr. Ignatius Donnelly's new book:"Ragnarok The Age of Fire and Gravel." _________________ The state commissioner of railroads for Michigan, in his report for the year 1881, just published, expresses the belief that the result of State supervision of railroads and freight rates has proven itself of great value, not only to the pub lic at large, but to the railroad corpora tions also. At the recent examination at the Lon don University for the degree of Batch elor of Arte sixteen out of twenty-two lady candidates passed the ordeal, and only ninety men out of two hundred and fifteen male applicants were passed to the degree. ,The average age of the la dies was less than that of the men.
