jonaibsonbtilc ( Ditf. A Kentucky Anecdote. It was customary in former days for all the ladies of the best families to attend the prominent barbecues; and this was especially the case in the con test between Mr. Breekenridge and General Combs, in 1840. Out of these affairs grew the the authentic story of the nicest widow in the blue-grass region. Not far from the Forks of Elkhorn lived the pretty little widow Faunt leroy, and one of her nearest neigh bors was General Peyton. The Gen eral had looked upon the little widow very much as he looked upon his blooded horse Powhattan, " the finest horse, sir, in the blue-grass region." But the widow, with her woman's art, kept her lover at bay, yet kept him in her train. He had escorted her to a barbecue given by the Whigs, and when return ing had exp...

S0onr sonbA ilC ( gbitf. " Eating Crow." An Amusing Acoount of the Origin of the Term, IWashington Cur. Cincinnati Counmercial.] CHAPTER I. Near the camp of the old Pennsyl vania Bucktail regiment, in Virginia, early in the war, lived an old, aristo cratic, exclusive and pompous Virgin ian, in true baronial style. His man sion, of very old age, was made of imported brick, the chimneys were tall and massive, and the rooms were large and pleasant. There were walks, and orchards, and arbors, and the whole bore such a scene of general peacefulness and repose that it was no wonder the wild Bucktails were charmed with the prospect, and anxious to penetrate into a spot which gave such promise of enjoyment. The Buncktails were not the most tractable soldiers. They can...
