To the young full of life and vi Tacity, the idea of sobriety frequent ly suggests a depressing gioora ana an austere gravity utterly at variance with the natural animation and spirit of their rears. Admitting it to be an excellent virtue in the ma ture and aged, it is yet esteemed heavy, formal distasteful to youth, and calculated to drain from it the ardor and enthusiasm which arc its chief attractions. But it needs no lengthy argument to prove how- superficial is such a view. Sobriety or sobermindedncss is simply the preponderance of sound reason, and includes the ability of forming for rect judgments, and the habit of car rying them out in practical life. No youth would willingly resign any portion of his reason,- still less wonld he desire habitually to act in opposition to it. But properly exer cised, sobriety no more damps the zeal or subdues the spirit of youth than it adds wrinkles to the brow of age. It is indeed opposed to folly, absurdity, a...

Fireside Department. A Good Answer. A young lady in Sabbath-school risked her class, 'How soon should a child give its heart to God?' One little girl said, 'When thirteen years old;' another, 'Ten;' another, 'Six.' At length the last child in the class spoke: 'Just as soon as we know who God is.' Charles Lamb and his Mother.
