Headqcabtebs Ansty or Vibgisia, ) Cedar Mountain, Aug. 18, 1862 J To Maj, General flailed; Commander-in-Chief: On Thursday morning the enemy crossed the Rapidan, at Barrett's Ford, in heavy force, and advanced strong on the road to Madison and Culpepper Court House. I had established my whole force on the turnpike between Culpepper and Spring villc, ready to concentrate at either place as soon as the plans of the enemy were devel oped. Early on Friday it bcoame apparent that the move on Madison Court House was merely a feint to drive the army corp of General Sigel at Springville, and that the main attack of the enemy would be at Culpepper, to which place I had thrown forward part of Bank's and McDowell's corps. Briadicr General Bayard, with part of the rear of McDowell's corps, who was iu advance near the Rapidan, fell slowly back, delaying and embarrassing the ene my's advance as far as poss...

Iiicnltttral Crijunn. PHILOSOPHY OF CURING HAY. The following from the Ohio Farmer is Fensible and to the point : " Don't dry jour hay too much. Ilay moy be diied until it as worthless as straw. As a good coffee maker would say, Don't liuin your coffee, bat brewn it j' so we say, don't dry your hay, but cure it. Our good old mothers, who relied upon herb tea instead of 'poiecary medicine gathered their herbs when in blossom and cured them in the shade. This is the philosophy of making good hay. Cut in the blossom and cure in the shade. The sugar of the plant, when it is in bloom, is in the stalk, ready to form tho seeds. If the plaet is cut earlier, the sugar is not there ; if later the sugar has become converted to woody matter. Has should be well wilted in the sun, but cured in the cock. Better to be a little too green than too dry. If, on put ting it into the barn, there is danger of 'heating in the mow, put on some salt. Cattle will like it none the less. Heat, light and dry win...

ggrkulitttal Column. CARE OF THE PEACH. From the proceedings of a Fruit Growers' Convention lately held" in Del aware, ire learn some important facts in regard to the cultivation of the Peach. For the growth of wood, early spring plowing is recommended j, but for pro ductiveness, plow in May or October. Turning the soil in October is preferred, as it is supposed to throw insects upon the surface that injure the fruit, thereby destroying them. Light or shoal plow ing and cultivating down, following the previous fall plowing, is very beneficial to trees. Fall plowing seems to delay or backcii the buds in the spring, and thus the early frosts are avoided in some measure. After early plowing the trees should be kept well trimmed until three years jojg ; after that time but little, except unnning out the branches where the fruit cannot grow, but never trim except when the tree is in leaf. Trimming before the sap starts causes the tree to decay ; the wounds do not heal soon. If trimmed in...
